my motor drags a couple of turns before it turns over quick, thought it was a weak battery, put in a new one, thats not it, put in a new starter-nope, checked the timing its fine, does anyone have this problem?

You said the timing is fine but how much are you running? Pull the coil wire or unplug your HEI to see if timing is the culprit.[I never trust the timing marks on Chevys...I have seen more that were wrong than right.]

Casey, if it sounds like it's binding, you may need to shim the starter. The shims go in between the stater, and the block to increase the clearance of the teeth. Shims should be available at the local parts store, or the dealer. Just put one in at a time...too many and the teeth will strip!

I would also say shim's as I had this slight problem and they cured the errr errr errr and then it fired. T he shim's are hella spendy though for what they are ..3 or 4 dollars'.

I'll pull the coil wire for a quick check of that, if thats not it, off to the parts store for shims, thanks guys. frenchblue72 good discription on what it sounds like, thats exactly the sound

I had a vehicle that did something similar. Turned out the wires going to the battery were old and hard. Electricity just could not go through them.
