Headers and exhaust would surely help but i dont think it would get you to 300hp but it will surely give you some extra power. If youve got the time, you could add a zz4 roller cam which would work fine with a 4x4 truck and comp cam beehive valve springs to match and a new ecm tune. May need larger injectors. That zz4 cam and headers and exhaust and a tune would prolly get you 325+hp as an estimate. some full roller self aligning rocker arms will free up a little hp and mpg too but at a hefty price.

Re: how to wake up a 97 350 vortec?
Good idea to stick with an EFI cam. The unit from the RAM JET 350 and the 383's is better suited for your application. I'm installing it in mine as we speak. part number 14097395. Despite what some retail websites say(incorrectly) that it is not a computer cam. I have learned over the years to always change the cam bearings in an engine over 75k miles.
With that, a CAI and free flowing exhaust would help. A continual problem with Vortec engines is the spider injectors. Get the modern replacements. Standard Motor Products FJ504 can be had for a song. Incidentally, all the other versions (GM, AC Delco, Delphi, BWD etc...) are made by standard. That sure would suck for him considering theres no such thing unless you convert to a marine intake manifold that uses standerd automotive fuel injectors.
