Under the hood colors on a 72 GMC

Hi Guys,
I'm new to the board and new to owning a 72 GMC Sierra Grande Camper Special. One of the first projects I want to accomplish is sprucing up under the hood. I've seen some great photos of what some of you have done with your trucks. Does anybody have a list of colors and paint codes to use on items under the hood like the brake cylinder, alternator, water pump and other small stuff?
Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard from Central Florida! Sounds like you have a very cool truck and of course we would like to see pictures. Now that I got that out of the way I'll post a pic of what I'm doing and if you like it I'll write down what I used when I get home. I'm not sure what it is supposed to look like but I knew what I wanted it to look like so.....

Unhappy Re: Under the hood colors on a 72 GMC

well I will put my 2 cents in If you like spending money and posable killing your self Keep that flex fan on that truck.Give it 5 years you will have a new hood ornament sticking throw the hood.

My friends father back in 1981 had a 1969 SS camaro with the 396 4 speed he just got done tuning it up and raving the **** out of it and thank god he was in the front seat and had the hood down.He revved the engine up one more time and one of the fan blades broke lose went throw the hood and the other one went throw the radiator.

He to thought they where a cool deal and gave him More horse power But the stress of them blades moving back and forth make them weak so never stand over them blades while the engine is running it will kill you in 20 Seconds or less

Hey RenoKeene
I like the color on your booster and the master cylinder cover. Is that chromed? I'll probably do the actual cylinder in black. Just my preference. The grey around your A/C housing looks great, where did that come from? I see your blue spark wires but I'm thinking of yellow for mine, got any recomendations on brand? Did you paint your vac collector or just clean it? I was lookig at how to post a photo of the engine compartment but couldn't find a way to get it from my computer. Looks like it has to be online. I'll be working on getting them posted. My truck is 97% original so most everyting but the rims and tires came from the factory. btw mines a 402 also, small world!

I'll give you a 100 dollar bill if it's a real camper special and a GMC at the same time.

I’d love to know for sure. Can you tell me ways to tell if it’s actually the truck it was billed to be?

I was just funnin' with ya'. Fords were camper specials. Chevy/GMC's were custom campers.

That Mistake was probably due to the bottle of wine with dinner. No turning wrenches the rest of the night I promise

Nice motor. Is that a dual battery tray on the edge there?

It's a very common mistake. I like going around calling ford camper specials, "custom campers". It's fun at times.

Good Spot! Yep, That tray's for an extra battery. Came from the factory that way, at least thats what the notes on the glove box door say. Looked a long time to find a 2500 with the 402, air, and auto I wanted. Would have loved the factory tach but didn't get it. Had to go all the way across the country to find it. I live in NC, bought it in CA and had it shipped.

Here's my 72 GMC 402 with all new rubber, paint touch ups, and a lot of general cleanup and detailing. I am trying to keep it original looking as possible.

I'm curious, and please don't be offended. But I gotta ask, how do you maintain a flex fan? What is the procedure?

Re: Under the hood colors on a 72 GMC

The only way to maintain a flex fan is to inspect the rivets from time to time, this truck is not going to have a lot of miles put on it so it won't be a problem. I personally have never heard of a new quality piece like this one (Flex-a-Lite from Summit) comming apart but I will keep an eye on it, thanks.

I used Dupli-Color Gold Lacquer in a rattle can from Tru-value on the brake booster and Argent Silver wheel paint on the cylinder. The A/C box is factory, just cleaned up.

Re: Under the hood colors on a 72 GMC

You should just leave it the way it is and install a 572 with factory valve covers and painted intake/heads. It would be a sleeper.

That looks great to me. I might opt for a bit of chrome or two btu I'm going mostly original too. You've done a great job here. I think I'll be happy when mine looks like yours. Congrats on a great job

Ah the NOTORIOUS FF. guess some are luckier than others, my 454 has had one on it for 11 years, 50k miles in a 77 blazer. Still going. Maybe they were made better then.

72sgcs, do it your way, but chrome is a killer to me, to much is such a paint to keep clean, for me anyway.
