Speaker Ideas?

I know this should be in the audio section but i thought i would get more replys here. I need some ideas for speakers for my 72 Custom Deluxe. The dash was cut when i bought the truck, has a cd player, and there are 2 miss-matched 6x9 speakers wired up just laying under the bench seat. The gas tank is still behind the seat so no room there. Just wanting to see if anyone has any ideas or could share what they have done [pics would be great]. My dad has every woodworking tool known to man, and i'm pretty handy with wood, so building some custom boxes would not be a problem. I have already googled this site and didn't find much help, i could have missed something though. Any ideas? Thanks, Joseph

Just a thought but has anybody tried one of these headliners with built in speakers or something similar with any success? http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/full.aspx?Page=95 I've been wondering about this same issue sanford hopefully we get some helpful ideas!

xb9rguy, that is a thought but i have the factory headliner in my truck and don't realy want to install that one. I have a nice 300-watt amp that would work perfect with some good 6x9's that i have. I just need to figure out where and how to put the 6x9's for good sound quality. Joseph

If mine had a head liner I wouldn't have even thought about this option and am still leary of it. The only other thing I have heard of or seen that isn't behind the bench seat are custom kick panel pods that you can make or buy.

There is enough room under the seats for speakers esp if you have the tools to make an enclosed sealed box setup that could be bolted in so it doesnt rattle. A 6x9 doesnt need much air space to pack a punch with a 300 watt amp.

Use small speakers from a suround sound home system. I have a sub and two small suround system speakers mounted on the windsheild pillars in my motorhome, it souds great. Bose systems are awsome, if you can pay the price. The speakers are small enough to mount under the dash, by the shoulder belt bolt holes, or where ever you want. I did a similar install in one of my Blazers, and used my I pod, connected to an EQ, and two amps for tunes. You almost couldn't see a thing, but the sound was great.

My plan is to make fiberglass kick panels for a 6 1/2" and tweeter and a shallow mount sub and amp under the stock bench.

The sound isn't top quality and it's echo-ey because of the cab acoustics, but it works and is good enough for me.

Home speakers are 8 ohm, car speakers, and amps, are 4 ohm, so you are cutting the efficiency of any amplifier in your truck in half by using home speakers..

There are more then enough options out there to use proper car speakers, there's no reason to use home stuff that it is not designed for

In the audio section of the board there is a board member that sells a product that allows you to mount 6x9s in the back cab corners. But it requires the gas tank to be relocated from behind the seat. Not sure if he is still selling them.

I think you'd be better off going with this set up as well.

I would only put 6x9s in the doors which means you'll have to cut a hole, but I wouldn't do that for a set that's miss-matched...so given I recommend buying another set, I would say ditch the 6x9s and go the component route...a decent set should match up well with a 300 watt amp.

I put my 6.5 in custom kicks and the tweet in the door. My subs will be where the tank was.

Thanks for the replys guys. I have seen the cab corner speaker mounts and that would be the way to go if the gas tank wasn't behind the seat. And i am for sure not going to cut the doors. I think some custom boxes under the seat would be the best bet, just have to do some more measuring. Again, thanks for the thoughts. Joseph
