Speedometer/odometer issues

I bought a 64 c10 about a month ago. The original owner said it was parked in the late 90's untill just recently and everythign worked when it worked. But the speedometer and odometer both dont work right now. Is this an issue with the cable or does it have to do with the gears? This is my first classic truck so im trying to learn as I go.

Re: Speedometer/odometer issues

First of all, take that "everything worked" thing with a grain of salt. We have all heard that line at some point. Now, if the speedometer and odometer are both non-operational I would suspect the cable. Unhook it and see if either end is broken or anything. If it isn't the cable itself then you would move on to removing the instrument panel to dig deeper, but start with the easiest thing first. Check the cable.

Re: Speedometer/odometer issues

you can get a cable at o'reilly's or autozone for around $13 (just bought one recently); finding a local speedometer shop would probably be next if that doesn't fix it.

Re: Speedometer/odometer issues

My speedo 'didnt work' in my '66. Once I pulled the cluster I found the needle in 3 pieces. It worked fine, but I dont know how it got broken.
