huh - found another difference btwn 68 and 72??

well, i have to replace my wing vent windows cause some kid in May tried to bust into my truck - bending my driver's wingvent window in backwards and ruining the hinge.

so, i bought a replacement window at the ohio meet, but after a suggestion by longhornmail, decided to switch both wingvent windows out for chrome. (thanks, andy!)

found a nice chrome pair in the junkyard monday, and i have been pulling out windows and vents and cranks all week, replacing and polishing and washing parts.

i pulled off the little handles on the vent windows that hold them in place. the handles on my original vent windows are nicer than the ones from the junkyard, so i thought i'd swap the handles.

well, it turns out that i not only had to swap the handles, but i also had to swap the base that the handle mounts to. the base is that chrome circle in the lower corner of the vent window, and it is a b**** to remove!

as it turns out, the handle bases are different from 1968 to 1972. the vent windows from the junkyard (that i bought for replacement) come from a1972 truck, and i have a 1968.

if you are familiar with this setup, there is a small shelf on the base that sits inside the handle, and determines how far the handle is allowed to turn. on my 1968, that shelf is on the bottom of the base, but on the 1972, the shelf was on the top. if i tried to put my 1968 handles on the 1972, the handles ended up upside-down. there is also a shelf down inside the handle, which also appears to be backwards from 1968 to 1972. it has totally confused me. but i thought you ppl might be interested, or might be able to shed some light on the subject.

i'll try to borrow my friend's digicam, and post some pics this evening. i imagine that i wont get them back together anytime soon because the base on the one wing vent window has seized, and i cannot get it off. what can i say? i'm a wimp. i'm a woman. i'll have to see if i can dig up a strong man to bust it off of there!

i *have* managed to replace the passenger side vent window --- and it looks SWEET with chrome! thanks andy! great suggestion!

until l8r....

If you try to get it done, and it takes you like 3 years or something, give me a holler and I'll do it in 5 min.
Actually, i have never taken any wing vents apart. Well, there was the one that I opened when I was doing about 90 MPH...it flew out and shattered in the street.
My wife asks..."aren't you going to stop?"
For what?

I just got into the truck scene about 5 years ago. I had the longhorn for 2 1/2 years untill it died, and then this GMC for 2 1/2 years.
I have never had anything in perfect shape, and I highly doubt I ever will.
The GMC is a beater turd. In reality, if it was an Escort station wagon, it would be almost as usefull as it is as a truck. It gets me to work, pretty much drop dead reliable, and kinda fun to own. (the escort would fail on the latter of the 3)
The first Longhorn was nice. It was far from perfect, however, it was a very clean rig. HERE are some pics of it.

Andy's like me.
The mechanics car is usually the ugliest one , but it runs GREAT!
My house has been described as a "cobbler's" house because I have used 16 pieces of drywall to cover an 8 foot wall...
Ya do whatever works at the time with what ya got.

Jewels, Thanks again for helping us "guys" out with my truck.
I had a REALLY BAD week (with my back) after helping him move into my house.

actually, it is just the 72 doors that are different. 67-71 doors are all basically the same, but then they changed it for some reason. i believe the window regulator is different, and there is a small depression on 72's under the vent window where a screw head is, where all the others never had this. good luck putting them in, I hope I never have to mess with mine...knock on wood!

pictures!!!

ok - to explain myself a little bit more... i have gotten some pictures.....

in all pictures:
LEFT = 1968
RIGHT = 1972

handle differences: (see first pic)

the cylindrical part of the handle slips over the base. inside this
cylinder is a triangle shaped piece which prevents the handle from turning all the way around. the handle will only turn about 1/4 of the way around (90 degrees).

on the 1968 handle, the triangle is on the lower left of the cylinder....

on the 1972 handle, the triangle is on the upper right of the cylinder.....

base differences: (the base holds the handle on the vent
window) (see second pic)

each base has a bump at the bottom to hold it in the window. as shown in the picture, the bump/protrusion on each base is
oriented on the left side. (see how the bottom part of the base is off-center to the left?)

on the 1968 handle, the top shelf (on which the handle sits) is facing to the right and the overall height of the base is shorter.

on the 1972 handle, the top shelf (on which the handle sits is facing to the left and the over height of the base is taller.

those are the differences. interesting, eh? so you cannot switch
a 1968 handle to a 1972 base. the base and the handles go together. go figure.

Well, when something "flys off " the truck @ 90 mph +......as long as its not an axle , drive shaft, or wheel(YIKES!)....you just leave the "hammer" down, & pretend those shattered parts dont belong to you crazyL

Something is not right there. Niether one of those look like 68 handles. The 68 was bigger with ribs and the 68 wing window should have a metal piece where the handle/pin attaches. 69-72 went through a hole in the glass. Do I have that right? I could get pics, but first what do your wing posts/pins look like?

Leaving parts on the freeway!!!!!!!!! Funny story...saw a vehicle hit the center guard rail in rush hour traffic in Fremont, CA. Flipped into the air over the guard rail and landed on the inside shoulder pointed toward the on coming traffic...very lucky that it did not go head-on into the the traffic. Several of us pull onto the shoulder and rush to car to aid the driver. NO DRIVER!!! We start looking for a body. NO LUCK! By this time several people have stopped. I go back to the car and look again...maybe the driver is under the car! Notice a tow bar on the front of the car. Call off the search. The guy never came back for the car! I am sure when he saw it go into the air toward the oncoming traffic he just pulled a LONGHORNMAIL and floored it...ROFLMAO! He probably didn't slow down until he reached LA!

Sorry Andy...I know you wouldn't do that!

hmm - now you really have me intrigued. i always assumed that my wing vent windows were original, but i suppose someone could have replaced them.

those are the wing-vent window handles from my vent windows. the handle labeled 1968 and the post labeled 1968 are both from my truck. and the base for the handles goes all the way thru the glass on my truck. there is a hole in the glass for the base to go thru. CPNE could probably answer this question -- he is always full of these unbelievable facts about our trucks.

can anyone help us out here? WING VENT WINDOW HANDLES --- are they different in 67-68?

thanks!

Here's my 68 vent window handle. The 67's were unique to the 67-72 bodystyle, as they were a carryover from 66. I have a set of 67 doors in the shed, but I'd have to dig to get them out :p

Here's a shot of the passenger door that was on my 67 panel, you can see the vent window handle is quite different.

67 only

There's the answer: 67 only was different, not 68. Sorry, I guess I confused you & me. I am going back into my corner and be quite now!
