Suburban Door Swap

We are thinking of going from clam shell to barn doors on the burban. Looking at the rear jambs it looks like all I may need are the doors and hinges and should bolt right in, is there anything I am missing? Will any barn doors from 60-66 work on the 65?

Re: Suburban Door Swap

Pretty sure they are all interchangeable if you have the doors and correct hinges and latches. Be sure to hang on to those clam shells though, they are worth $$.

Re: Suburban Door Swap

As far as I know all you need is the '60-'66 cargo doors with hinges and the latches, and it should all bolt up. Although, you will have the notches in the tailpan where the tailgate hinges were. If you don't have the cargo doors already, you should be able to find some easily since most guys want the tailgate and hatch. In fact member Nobby is in the process of converting his from cargo doors to a tailgate and hatch. He has a build thread in the 'Projects and Builds' section.

Re: Suburban Door Swap

My father in law did this swap on his 1960 Chevy Carryall back in the early 70’s. He hated the tailgate arrangement because it was the family car and made it difficult to load groceries. He had very limited mechanical skills but installed the barn doors without any problems in one afternoon. He just picked up the doors and hardware at the junkyard, brought them home and bolted them on. I can’t relay any technical details, but it must have been relatively easy or he would have completely hacked up the truck (probably with a torch) to make it work.

Re: Suburban Door Swap

the notches in the tailpan get the plastic fillers you take off the hinge holes on the sides.
