Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

My 73 Has a low end sound system in at the moment, I'm not really a big audio guy/ however I have had nice audio systems. With the chevy I want to make sure I have a decent sound system as part of the interior.

I do like to support my local economy anytime I can. Went down to a car audio only store, talked to the guy about a 10" subwoffer in a box to fit behind the seat along with some simple already enclosed speakers to put behind them. Lastly to install another cd player.
Labor 230plus tax.

Again, I'm happy to pay to have some work done in town and make sure it's proffesionaly clean. BUT I don't understand how running wires for an hour can turn into 230.

I ordered my new cd deck and speakers online, bought a wiring kit online saved a good chunk of change. About 100 savings after shipping. I am going to buy to 5dollar tool to pull out cd players today and run some sound deadener/run this wiring kit. I still need to pick up a sub/amp/box. But I'll wait until i can get the items installed. I will start a mini build thread for the audio if anyone is interested.
Happy new years everyone.
Anthony

Did he give you an hourly lador rate and how long it would take? Seems it would take a little longer than one hour for a clean install.

Re: Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

The sound deadening install was going to be by myself either way, the sub I was looking at had an amp attached. The cd player is supposed to be free. Soo, running wiring for 230 is a bit much I don't care who's throwing it in. Power, ground, rca's remote wire/ twist them up and tuck appropriately. really this is hooking up the amp. Got the sound deadening material set up. 30 bucks from lowes (eff u dynamatte)
Pics are before getting out air pockets.

Instead of purchasing a roller to flatten the material, I let my inner gangster out. Used the butt of my ak-47's bayonet. haha, worked great. The edge did of course have its plastic cover.
I am about to run the wiring, and pull the current cd player/ good day today. Still need to wait for the cd player and speakers to come in the mail. I haven't quite decided on the sub/amp combo. More to come.

Here are the speakers that are going on the sides of the box behind the seat.
Amazon.com: Pioneer TS-X150 Surface Mount 3-Way... Amazon.com: Pioneer TS-X150 Surface Mount 3-Way...Grabbed for 69 shipped, heard these at a local retailer/ they will do fine. The highs should make up for the speakers being behind me.

Here is the cd deck.
http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchf...2-o_front.jpeg
Love alpine, this deck will give direct control and filter options for the noise from the sub.

Re: Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

This stuff is meant for waterproofing protection for roofs. It is self adhesive, the can was rustoleum from areas that had surface rust that I knocked down and sprayed before applying the deadener.
It is called Vycor allpurpose flashing. 9inch tall 50 ft roll, 2 rolls will make you happy compared to the 200 and up on dynamat.

Just took a short ride with it buttoned up,. dayum mayun night and day difference. It is much more comfortable to drive around. This stuff has really killed road noise and the mild aftermarket exhaust. More enjoyable to cruise around now.

Re: Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

Paid 29.99 plus tax at my local lowes. 2 rolls will do to 2 layers in a single cab for the rear roof and complete floor. Easier to cut than I was thinking.
It does come in a roll, there is a tar like smell. It is faint, no issues with smell during instal. I will update on how long it takes for the odor to completely go away.

I installed in my cold garage, expect this stuff to be sticky in warm temperatures at instalation.

I would expect the odor to come back every time it gets hot outside. Hopefully your experience is different.

Sweet man, if u go this route share your results!
As far as the smell becoming an issue, it has not been from what I have read from other people using this type of product.

I've heard a lot of things like roofing materials that are asphalt based and I have not heard of the summer heat causing the asphalt to smell. You only smell a new road once you know

Re: Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

I have had the same bad tar smell experiences from a couple people I know that have tried to save money by using those materials. It's not pleasant and not worth the money saved.

Re: Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

most auto sound deadeners are butyl rubber, which doesnt have the tar smell. the only down side it its more expensive to make that the styrene butadiene styrene or (srs) waterproofers (that also dampen sound) like what you put in your car. its the butadiene/asphalt mixture that smells like tar. when it gets hot it starts outgasing which is were you get the smell from, theres no way around it. if you use it in an enclosed space and it gets hot, itll smell like tar.

Well I'm sure that after a while the smell will dissolve and the heat won't effect it so much. Maybe cycle it in the oven a couple of times

Re: Ca audio shops labor fees. Wow/ simple car sys thread.

I used peel-n-stick roll flashing to do my Mustang. I think i used five or six rolls, 6"x50' if I recall. Did the floor, inside the doors, roof. Put home carpet padding under the carpet, under the door panels, above the head liner, under and behind the back seat, under the rear quarter plastics and stuffed the rear quarters and c-pillars with fiberglass home insulation. Mad a huge difference. not half a whiff of asphalt smell from the roofing materials used in the car.
