Compressor pump?

Ok so my compressor decided to die on me the other day and I'm wondering if my 3.5 hp motor will run a larger pump? I woul really like more cfm's from my compressor but don't want to spend $1000 for a new one.

Re: Compressor pump?

Pumps are rated by horsepower. You can buy a 3.5 HP pump, and check the amps on the motor. If you are not at nameplate amps, change the motor sheave. A little bigger sheave will spin the pump faster, and raise the amps. Faster = more cfm. This is within reason though. Too fast will scatter the pump. They make an adjustable motor sheave, so you can tweak it in. Take amp readings just before the switch shuts it off.

Re: Compressor pump?

You didn't say what you started with, so I can't tell you if this is more cfm. If the question was what's a good compressor to run off of a 3.5 hp motor, then Grainger 2WGX7 would be my answer. It will make 8.5 cfm @135 on a 3.5motor. As mentioned above you will more than likely be changing drive sheaves as well.
