700r4 0nto a 283
I am gettig ready to put the 283 back into my 63 and I have purchased a 700r4 to hook up to it. My question is: will the starter that is on the 283 work with the trans? The starter bolts onto the block with bolts (3) that go into the block from the side as opposed to all the other small block starters I have had that have 2 bolts either staggered or across from each other. The truck has a 4 speed now, I know I need a flex plate .Thanks

You will have to change starters. Good time to upgrade to the newer mini-starter.

Re: 700r4 0nto a 283
I have a 283 engine (1967 block) and 700R4 combo on my 60 truck also... The original starter will not work. I bought a Chevy flex plate 168 teeth and a Hitachi mini starter (universal bolt holes). The universal mini starter was the best thing I got considering all the problems I would have with the original style starter and 4 speed standard trans that used to be in my truck. In hot summer days my starter would act up because of the close heat from the exhaust manifolds. I used diff starters, heat shields, and rewire starter in the past an problem never went away.

Re: 700r4 0nto a 283
Thanks for the info. Never hurts to ask someone thats already been there. I'll get a mini-starter ordered and procede with caution!! May have to ask more questions as this build continues. Thanks again
