Good chemical to remove glue and trim.

I just purchased an 84 GMC SWB and the trim on it was faded badly and needed to come off. I have used Castrol Super Clean in the purple bottle many times for cleaning and de-greasing, so I decided to give it another try. I had pulled one piece of trim off already and was getting ready to take a razor blade to the left over glue/tape. I sprayed it down with Super Clean to remove the excess dirt and minimize scratches.

Well, as soon as I wiped it with a rag, I noticed the glue had almost turned to a gel. So I went all the way around the truck and sprayed the rest of the trim to let it soak before I pulled it off. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and the trim pulled/fell right off! Just a little more cleaning and wiping, and a little razor blade, and the truck looked ten times better. I rubbed a little cleaning compound on the paint where the trim used to be and it came very clean.

Works great on engine detailing as well. Just wanted to share with everyone.

Re: Good chemical to remove glue and trim.

Energine works well, but I'm not sure how it would react on paint.

Glad to hear it worked for you.

Re: Good chemical to remove glue and trim.

I normally use 3M adhesive remover, or PrepSol.
(both are great wax and grease removers also)
Recently I had removed some old door edge guards from an original paint truck.
It appeared that the door edge guards were installed with a very hard adhesive,... almost like contact cement.
No chemical worked on it.
Then I purchased a 3M eraser wheel that is used with a standard drill.
It worked great.
They are kinda pricey,... but it saved my original paint!

Re: Good chemical to remove glue and trim.

I could use one of them on a project right now. Where did you get it from?

Re: Good chemical to remove glue and trim.

I got mine at a local auto parts store.
Anyone that carries 3M paint products.
They're about $40 but they last a long time.

Re: Good chemical to remove glue and trim.

Guys a secret of the trade is to use a valve stem with an electric drill to remove any kind of glue or adhesive.

attach the valve stem to the drill from the threaded side into the chuck and use the drill on slow and with the rubber side of the stemm the part that would normally be insode the wheel rub off all the glue, adhesive etc.

then wipe it with ACRYSOL and you are done. I have ownder many chevy 1500 and the first thing we do is remove all the black trim moldings doing it this way it literally takes me 15 minutes to do the whole truck.
