High Torque starter installation

I am putting a high torque Summit Racing starter on my 383 stroker. the truck is a 87 R10.

My questions
1- There is a small pin type connection on the side of the starter. I am assuming the small GM wire goes to this. I will need to remove the current bolt mount and place the pin end on the wire?
2- Does the high torque mount the same as a standard OEM starter?
3- Does the troque converter cover still be used with the high torque starter?

Re: High Torque starter installation

First of all the high torque starter is just that a starter that generates a higher torque than a stock design unit. So with that in mind, the mounting should be the exact same as the other starter and you would still have to ensure that you have the proper spacing between the starter gear and the ring gear on the flexplate. Also the shroud for the torque converter is there to keep nasties from getting into the gearing and also to protect your fingers, so I would leave it on after you get the starter installed.

Re: High Torque starter installation

for the record, i have a CSR platinum pro in my C10 and the shimming of it was VERY finicky, be SURE you read the instructions and have the correct tolerances for everything, do NOT just slap it in and go, i needed almost all my shims if not a few extra to get it correct. i needed most of my shims behind the billet plate to help bring the actual starter gear back away from the flexplate as it was very very close and sometimes contacting starter gear. ours may or may not be the same way, just make sure you shim it right and double check ALL tolerances

Re: High Torque starter installation

I installed it and used zero shims. The starter gear came out and contacted teeth fine. I did not have a feeler to check the instruction gap but when I started it no issues.

We will see.
