383 Stroker Q's...
How much time and work is it to make my 350 into a 383 stroker? I know that you need a 400 crank, flywheel and balancer, and rods. What else is there? And how much would this end up costing me?
Thanks

Check out the Jeg's and PAW cataloges. They should be online. Then get with your machine shop and check their pricing. This will give you a ballpark figure.i USUALLY ADD ABOUT 10 TO 25% to that.
I would also encourage you to look at Scoggins-Dickey or some of the other GM genuine performance parts websites, since Chevy now offers a 383 crate motor which should be available as a shortblock by now.It may be $$$wise to do that since it would have a warranty. Good luck and have fun!!!!

you will need new pistons and have the assembly balanced. The machine work cost me 600 bucks..about 250 more than a normal 350

OK...
I have a class in school for three hours every day for the first semester. This is where I plan to do the work. I don't know a whole lot about car and truck engines. The biggest thing I have ever rebuilt is my Honda XR200(4 stroke) dirtbike. That had a siezed connecting rod, so I had to take the engine down to nothing and get the crankshaft in pieces. I got it all back together successfully and it runs perfect. I don't think it could be too hard to rebuild just an engine with no transmission to try to work with(like the dirtbike). Plus I have you guys here to help me out if I run into any trouble with the engine. I love this board!

Chevelle.
It is a great board and I would suggest any of the major parts houses for parts or Sallee Chevrolet for a complete crate 383.....there are also several good books to work with as well which I am sure can be found at Amazon.

Well, I cannot buy a shortblock or a crate motor. I don't have 3 or 4 grand laying around. I need to build this motor with $1000 or less.

BTW, I already have a 350. I just need the parts to make it a 383.

You can do a budget stroker, but be aware that many of the budget kits use a 400 sb "short rod" , & a 350 piston (5.565 vs the 5.7 350 rod). These kits will assemble, & USUALLY need no clearancing for the rotating assy.......the bad thing is that you may end up decking the snot out of the block ,to get the proper quench. I talked with 1 guy at a machine shop, & he had cut .050 from the decks of the block on 1 to get the quench in line. the shorter rod is in theory supposed to give a little more low end tork.....but most guys claim that the "difference " is eaten up by the extra friction......probably a good call too. My 383 was set up with 5.7 rods, & there is some rod & block clearancing involved.....also 3 spots on the oil pan were heated & clearanced with a ballpeen(for rod clearance). A "hotrod stroker " is not cheap to build, & If i do another one, it will be a 6" rod combo, with an internally balanced crank .....every time you swap a flywheel or balancer, you have potential problems with external balance. Good luck, crazyL
