Is any body familiar with a chevy 292 with a 3 Speed on the tree?

Hi there.... i recently bought a 71 c10 with a 292 and a 3 on the tree transmission.(with no tach) I notice that when i shift from 1st to 2nd or or 2nd to 3rd that the rpms are too low to meet the proceeding gear. I now bring my engine to a way high rpm ( i can tell because of the way she feels and sounds) and then shift.

I would like to know if this is normal for my kind of set up or maybe i have a serious problem.

Thanks

Rhy

I dont quite understand the question but there is a wide split in the ratios on those old trans. It sounds like it is normal. You have to get the feel of it & tailor the engine speed to match the next gear.

I have the SM 465 floor shift behind my 292, but with the granny gear, you hardly ever use 1st. I usually shift at about 2000-2500 RPM between gears. 292s tend to lope low.

All 3 on the tree rigs I have ever owned or driven have that same rpm split. There's only 3 gears. If it weren't that way... you'd be cruising at 4,500 rpm at 60mph.
