What motor should I have???

Just curious on what motor Ive got in my 63 c20. Its a v8 4 speed manual. Wondering because when I went to buy a starter I told them I needed one for a 283 4 speed, and one was not available. Got me to wondering If maybe I had something different. Thanks, Jared

Re: What motor should I have???

You should be able to get a starter for that one. My local O'Reilly gave me the wrong one for my 63 and their computer wouldn't pull up the correct one. A dozen years ago I never had that problem. I told them to give me one from a 70's and they could then find it. I took my old one to make sure the bolt pattern fit, because that's what was wrong with the first one. A 283 was available on your truck. If you get the numbers off of the block behind the driver's side cylinder head, I can tell you what it is. It should be seven numbers long. Here's some examples from 1963 trucks, but whatever V8 you have in that era should use the same starter. I think it's the same for inline 6 also, but somebody else can correct me if I am wrong. I am sure I used the same starter when I went from 6 to 8 back in 1987.

It would be the model that bolts to the bell housing instead of the block I believe. Does yours have the bolts mounting vertically into the block or horizontally into the bell housing?

It bolts horizontally. I bought a starter for a 283 with 3speed. Works just fine. Ill have to check out the numbers and see if its a 283 or not. Thanks guys!
