question on my air filter

hi guys,

I want to start using my original air filter again, but dont understand the function of some parts, please help.

Its from my 350 (original) engine from '86.

1. what is the little green thingy near the red arrow?

2. the metal filter in the center is not removeable as far as I can judge? will it need to be replaced in time?

3. why is this metal filter in there, when there is already a normal filter in there?



this is the EGR-AIR schematic that is printed on it.

The green thing ,I believe, is the THERMAC temp sensor. iirc there are a couple vac hoses to it, 1 to the flapper towards the snorkel of the air cleaner.

Metal filter, don't know, mine doesn't have it, that doesn't mean the PO didn't rip it out. (gasket for it is there) my air cleaner is about 5" tall.

I would like to know this information too, my truck has that same setup on a 305, and I never found someone that had the exact same setup I've found close but not the same.

I took a hammer to my little metal filter and pulled it out. more air is better

I've heard that metal "filter" thing is sort of like the vapor canister that's hooked to the gas tank vent. Only instead of storing gas fumes that evaporate from the tank, this one stores gas fumes that evaporate from the carb when the engine isn't running.

that sounds acceptable, since my car was orignally a SMOG version. But I took everything I could of. so there is no reason for me to keep that extra filter in there I guess..

The green thing is the temp sensor for the vacuum motor in the snorkel.

One end goes to a manifold vacuum source, the other connected to the nipple on the snorkel. When its cold the green thing allows vacuum to pass, and the door in the snorkel moves up blocking the cold air intake, and opening up the bottom passage to pull air from the heat stove around the exhaust manifold to allow heated air into the carb.

So does this help it start in cold weather?

okay, thanks, so need for it for me. I drive on LPG 99% of the time and that will start summer or winter no problem...

As a concept, most people individually cannot outsmart GM and their hundred year history and employee' knowlege for basic driveability in all conditions.

Okay I was just wonder because my truck is impossible to start in weather below 40 degrees. And my truck has that so I was wondering if that was part of the reason why.

Don't think it would be so much a starting issue as a warm up, idle issue. Sounds like you have a choke problem.

Take a warm hair dryer, shove it up the snorkle pipe and try and start the thing. Doubt if it will make a difference, but the flapper should open and let it idle better at start.



I am an amatuer. If I had your problem, would probably make sure you are getting vacume advance to distributor. Someone who knows what they are talking about probably has a better idea.

hi Axle,

it must be some kind of temp thing, but you cant connect any vacuum hoses to it, because the terminals arent pipes (sorry for my english)...there is another vacuum-temp-switch in my filter at a different place, more on the outside, that does have the vacuum connections.

I can get the truck to start and idle for a couple of seconds but then it dies out. But when it idles it's rough and hard to keep running. And it only happens when it's cold out.

Choke problem first, then warm air cutoff switch in air cleaner.
