Rust in gas tank

I've got rust in my gas tank (behind the seat). I bought one on craigslist, and it was worse than the one I had originally. So, how can I go about cleaning the rust out of the gas tank?? I can't afford a $300-500 under the bed tank yet, so I"m trying to make do with what I have.

Re: Rust in gas tank

Hirsch makes a gas tank sealer. Hot Rod magazine did a story a bunch of years ago about getting the rust out of an older tank. Pull the sending unit out of it and put a handful of rocks into the tank. Then, shake the tank and rattle it till you're deaf. Use some kind of solvent to wash out the rust that is loosened by the rocks and pour it all out. When it is dry, seal it with the Hirsch material.

Oh, my son-in-law (one of them) lives in ZHills....with my daughter and their kids. Nice area.

Re: Rust in gas tank

In the old days, we would get all the gas out. get a couple of handfulls of good white chat gravel, several gallons of laquer thinner. Put everything in the tank, seal up all outlets, strap it down in the bed of your old farm/work truck and go cruising the gravel roads, doing whatever you do while cruising gravel roads. Nothing like a nice long drive to help clean parts.

Go down to your local Home Depot and buy a gallon of Muriatic Acid. it's in the swimming pool chemicals part of the garden shop. Pour the whole thing into your tank and slosh it around for a half hour or so. It will dissolve all of the rust and none of the good metal. Pour the crap back into the gallon jug and dispose of it then use the Hirsch tank sealer everybody around here likes after waiting a day for the tank to dry out.

Re: Rust in gas tank

the muriatic acid works real well// but b4 using it i'd use a pressure washer first to get as much loose stuff out prior to the acid to get beast results

i've used the POR15 stuff it was excellent, my local autopaint supply store has it in stock or if you go to sumpter swapmeets there is usually a guy selling it there either of those places you wont need to pay shipping

Re: Rust in gas tank

ONLY use Muriatic acid as an absolute LAST RESORT.

It works but if the condition of your tank is not so good it can do more harm than good, by removing to much metal especially if there is a rusty thin spot.

I would take it to your local Radiator shop, they do Gas tanks too, let them soak it for a couple of days they will pressure check and clean out the lines. for less then $50.00.

i have taken several Gas Tanks in to the radiator guy, if it is bad shape, they tell you it's bad and they wont charge you anything.

They can coat your tank for you too.

Then you dont have to deal with the Chem's

maybe this is another solution

Re: Rust in gas tank

so with all this input about sealing the tank with these kits isnt that kinda like a bandaid ...they have radiator sealers too we know how they work. what about just getting a new one?they are not that much imo.
