Re: Can someone post some pics of camaro tach in a 67-72 cluster

Problem with many factory Camaro tachs, especially if they are original, is that they are worth major bucks. I would certainly sell a factory tach if I had it and buy a whole new trick gauge cluster with the money. Now granted, if we are talking mid 70's and up, they are not worth nearly what the earlier one are. Seems like trying to use ANYTHING factory would be hard to mod because it would have been designed to fit in it's own factory gauge cluster. Aftermarket tachs and gauges are much more user friendly and will tend to have a more "universal" mounting system.

Hmmmm... is this pertaining to my video?

I think comments like that do nothing but cause friction among members.

Most sites would pull a video like that because they have clauses about posting videos pertaining to street racing, reckless driving....etc. I'm not a fan of people driving (by your speedo) in and around 90 mph on the same roads my family drive on in a 40+ year old heavy vehicle.

I could also care less about ruffling feathers in this area!

1970 to 1978 for sure work. They changed the dash a little in 79 but I can't remember if the gauges changed too. If not then up to 81 would work.

Does anyone know what all would be needed for this conversion? I currently do not have a tach and think this is a pretty good option instead of spending the money for stock. Thanks for the link Austin

Re: Can someone post some pics of camaro tach in a 67-72 cluster

Check out this link - it is all you need to know.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=250683

I did mine a few months ago following these instructions (thanks, Gringoloco!) and it turned out fine. The hard part is cutting the opening in the front tin for the tach, but recently I saw a member (forget who) who was selling the tins modified for this tach. Anyway, it's a pretty easy job. I think I paid about $30 for the tach on EBay
Since the Camaro tach has an oil pressure light, I connected that too.

I was waiting for that to come up. To me, going sideways for 2 seconds at about 25 mph and going 90 are just a little different.

Re: Can someone post some pics of camaro tach in a 67-72 cluster

90mph on a 6-lane freeway like in the first bit of video isn't going that much faster than everyone else most of the time. On the interstates around here it's pretty common to see people doing 80. On a straight stretch of country road with no other vehicles present is probably one of the best places to open up. It looks like both videos are in a place like that, which exhibits fairly good judgement (as far as being hot rodders goes). I don't make a habit out of 90 mph runs, but those are the two places I may find it happening. My 11 second Harley is doing that by the time I hit 4th gear, then I let off. When I rip through the gears from a stop, most of the time I just give it a blip in fourth, drop it into 5th,another blip, and back it down cuz I'm usually running out of road. Those who have it cant resist using it from time to time and we just need to keep our heads and only do it in the right places. It's always a risk and never forget that! It's funny, cuz driving through town or a neighborhood I end up with someone hugging my back bumper (usually a mini van or suv with mom and her kids) because that's where you'll never see me speed. It looks like a parade on Main St. when I roll through

Austin......I retract my statement. It does seem a little hypocritical. I watched the video again and there was not only no one around you but most importantly.....wide open shoulders. To me, that's most important. My bad!

Special K...thanks for the objective opinion.

Re: Can someone post some pics of camaro tach in a 67-72 cluster

Ok everyone, let's all drive 90 now! Hey,if you can't laugh then what the hay? No one's wrong here and no one's right. No one is supposed to drive .5 mph over the speed limit by law,but every judge in the nation has exceeded that by at least 10x at some point (that's 5 mph ). No one is supposed to spin their tires either, but who hasn't by accident at one point? Matter of fact, every time I spun my wheels or drove over the speed limit it was an accident...I swear!
On another note, all this coming from the king of knee jerk reactions. Maybe it takes one to know one fits here. It's so much easier to see other's faults than our own. That's why I try to see my faults in others.

And yet on another note (I'm writing a song now), I have a dash with a Camaro tach and haven't been able to locate the dern thang to show a picture. I haven't looked at it so long I can't remember which year it's from. It has the red line painted on and as I recall it was 8 grand? Does that sound right or was it 7? I built it about 15 years ago for a truck I sold before I installed the cluster.

The guys on thirdgen.org have figured out what fails in them and what to do to fix it as well as calibrate them to read properly.

You can even make a 6-cyl tach work on a V-8 with info they share too.

No worries man, I do agree with the subject matter of your statement 100%, that is why I made the runs in the places I did. (as K pointed out)

My "friction" statement was more hinting to this thread being about info sharing and not difference of opinion on how to be safe, trying not offend the OP that is seeking info by cluttering his thread up with a-lot of back and fourth banter

I hope we can keep info flowing on the topic, because I know for me these forums have been the DIRECT source of info I have needed to complete many of my projects.

Thanks to everyone who helps keep this place THE #1 source on the internet for information & straight up GREAT HELP! when it comes to our passion.

Scott.
