700r4 to 400

A freind of mine has had it with the 700r4 in is 93 truck. Wants to go to a 400 turbo. anybody know of a web site that will give me the diminsions of each so we can get his driveshaft redone. He will have to lengthen won't he? Long wheel base truck so how long is to long ( in the driveshaft dept). anybody have any experience in doing this? thanks Jay

I'd say the main issue to overcome here is that his truck uses an electronic speedometer signal. You'll need to configure the 400 to do the same. Late model 454SS trucks had turbo 400s with the electronic dash, so that's one road you might check out.

good point, I didn't think about the speedo. Was thinking of computer controls on engine. Any Idea if it will effect them?

If worse came to worse, you could model it around a manual tranny truck. They didn't use any electronics on the tranny. The engine wiring was stand alone.

You should check into a 4l80e trans, which is a turbo 400 with overdrive. They were put in the heavier duty trucks instead of the 4l60e (700r4) trans. I think that would be your best bet.

Yea I here ya on keeping the overdrive. I tried to talk him out of it but he is low on funds and he can get the 400 turbo for 400 and fresh rebuild. He's a single parent and this is the third 700r4 he had. this last one is only about 6 months old and the dude that rebuilt has skipped town.
