Re: bump stop on lca
I left mine on and trimmed some off the top to gain ample clearance....

Re: bump stop on lca
I cut the tips off mine so that they were square chunks of rubber to have something soft to bottom out on.

Re: bump stop on lca
I cut mine all the way off to give myself more path of travel. If you leave the bump stops in you're going to definetly bottom out. If you remove the bump stops and leave the mount you're going to bottom out from time to time with metal to metal. If you remove bump stops and mount its less likely that you'll bottom out...unless you're playing the dukes of hazard over pot holes all the time. In that case you have more to be worried about that bottoming out your A-arms.

Re: bump stop on lca
I cut mine off completely down to the a-arm. I see no reason to leave them on there unless you just like having your teeth rattled once in awhile.

Re: bump stop on lca
You can run w/o the bump stops but they don't have to be removed. Many people remove them so the bumpstop doesn't limit suspension travel @ the x-member.
My experiences say that if you remove the bump stop, you're only shifting where the point of contact is.... If you still have inner fender wells & the tires are tall enough, you'll have occassional interference there. If you remove the inner fender wells & bump stops, the lower control arm bushings will make occassional contact (interference) w/the road. Last edited by gGMC DOG; 01-10-2012 at 01:33 AM. |

Re: bump stop on lca
Like most questions on this you can get three people giving you five opinions. If it was mine, I would replace them. Even if you drive on smooth roads you can hit a pothole or railroad crossing or something like that.
I would prefer to slam rubber to steel than steel to steel. The main purpose of a bump stop is to serve as some final suspension cushion to keep the metal parts from coming together or from traveling too far, which might in some way damage the suspension or chassis |

Re: bump stop on lca
I dont have problems bottoming out & mine are cut off also....I am 6" drop with spindles & springs. MY problem and reason I am installing a stop again is to try to keep the tire from hitting the inner fender well on big dips. Bottoming is not the issue, only thing that hits is tire to inner fender, I have never hit metal to metal even when hauling or towing!

Re: bump stop on lca
Here is a pic of my lowers the guy hacked before I lowered it the rite way. And a shot of the top.....I know its oily it is just mocked up to drive & now is all coming off to get painted.
Not shure what they cut off but I can see something was cut off the lower. Like I said the only thing that hits is my tire into the upper part of the inner fender well! |

Re: bump stop on lca
I had to grind part of the old stop off of the control arm. Someone else cut them off. I made a template of the bottom of the stop out of 1/8th inch thick paper 2 inches wide, and 5 and 1/2 inches long. I figured out where to place it on the control arm. Then figured out where to drill a small hole. Flipped it over and placed it on the other control arm, and drilled 3/8th inch holes in the control the arms. The truck has to be on the ground, and turned enough so the wheel almost hits the control arm. Then I drew up the plans and took it to a machine shop, and had them cut, and drill them. They cost $75.00. I will see how well they work this spring. The stop is 2 inches by 2 inches, by 5 and 1/2 inches long.
