Reverse lights but shifter in Drive

Is there any adjustment to the column, shifter, or neutral safety switch?
I don't know what I have done, but now my backup lights come on in Drive.
Young Frankenstein needs help.

There is a slight amount of adjustment on the neutral switch but I dont think it would move that much. Does the truck start in any other position than park or neutral?

Re: Reverse lights but shifter in Drive

I just finished replacing the BU light switch in my '70 yesterday. What a chore! I had some difficulty getting the switch to seat properly. It is possible to have it installed with the slider mechanism not seated on the shift lever.

My truck starts with my 2002 key (see my Young Frankenstein build). I am only using the safety switch for the reverse lights function.

Can you describe this or how to fix it? I had the column in and out at least 5 times, could I have knocked it or bent it?

theres your problem...

there should be 2 sets of contacts on the neutral switch 1 set is for back up lights and the other set is for neutral safety

Drew is using the chassis and driveline from a late model truck with column for a 67-72, so his neutral saftey is in a completely different area than where we are used too.

Drew,

I doubt that the column switch has that much adjustment to get the reverse light on while in drive, but I have been wrrong before. Installing the column could move the switch by bumping, there should be two 5/16 head sheetmetal screwd holding it. Turn on the ignition and put the shifter into reverse.......oh ya engine not running or you'll be running after the truck! (saftey tip). Then loosen the bolt and tip the switch till the light come on, then just test to see that they are only coming on in reverse.

Sorry for the mis-understanding, just trying to help : )
I also commented that there was only minor adjustment on the switch.
I looked at the build thread but did not see any post on where you were getting the neutral safety from.
I asked the first question about starting the truck in any other shifter position to try to determine if the back up wires could be connected to the wrong set of contacts.
You might also remove the wires from the switch and test it (the switch) with a continuity tester if you have one handy. If you had the switch off you could test it on the bench, have the meter on the contacts then slide the switch over and see what position the switch gets to when you have continuity
hope this helps

Re: Reverse lights but shifter in Drive

Thanks for the responses, I hadn't had time to tinker with it again. I let you know when I figure it out.

Re: Reverse lights but shifter in Drive

Mine used to do the same thing with a B&M hammer shifter. Just took the reverse light bulbs out and called it a day.
