VIN showing up as a van..
Hey yall I've been around for a bit looking at all the useful information on here, but I recently made a purchase of a 1974 K10 Chevrolet (VIN shows 76) and have ran into a problem with insurance. I bought the truck from Alabama and I am a Florida resident so all that is required for me to get a title is a bill of sale and a copy of Alabama registration. Well I needed to get proof of insurance before I registered it, but my insurance company says the VIN is that of a Sportvan/g10... I've ran the VIN multiple times with GM Sheets and its clearly a truck. I was curious what I can do to remedy this problem? Much appreciated
The VIN is CKL146F361296 |

Re: VIN showing up as a van..
Vin breaks down to a 76 K10 with a 350 4 barrel carb. I'm assuming you bought it with bill of sale only. Did you call another insurance company to see what they say?

Re: VIN showing up as a van..
That's what the vin came up for me too. Yes I bought the bill of sale, but also received a copy of the registration from Alabama. I just got off the phone with the tag office and they told me that they would Title it as they saw it (Basically she said, if it looks like a truck, they'll title it as a truck). But I'm about to call another insurance company and see what they say. Do you think I'll have any problem getting it titled as a 76' even though the bill of sale and registration say 74'?
Should I print off a copy of this to show that it is in fact a 76' K10 Truck instead of a van? http://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vi.../vincard76.pdf |

Re: VIN showing up as a van..
I would say if the Vin says its a 76 they should reg it as a 76. Maybe it was a clerical error years ago in Alabama. Don't understand the van thing unless the ins agent entered the Vin# wrong. That's some weird stuff going on with your truck. Makes me wonder if it was stolen at one time or had the cab swapped with the original cab being a 74.

Re: VIN showing up as a van..
I think it was just an error. The 4 and 6 in the VIN are right next to eachother, someone misread it and thought it was a 74'. I actually stumbled on some old insurance cards in the glovebox a day ago. One is in 1996 registered as a 76' and then again in 2004 as a 74'. Hopefully it's just a mistake.

Re: VIN showing up as a van..
Years ago, my 78 Silverado always came up as a 78 Blazer on the insurance card for some reason. More recently, my 77 GMC comes up as a 75 GMC. I'm guessing they just name the vehicle whatever their computers decode the VIN as.
Funny thing is, now my inspection sticker says 75 GMC on it too because the inspector read it off the insurance card and wrote that in on the sticker.

Re: VIN showing up as a van..
I think the insurance companies misread the VIN, or don't have a database for a lot of older vehicles... Who knows! I faxed the VIN Decoder Sheet from GM's website to my insurance company, they looked it over and did agree with me that it is in fact a 76 K10. Just have to get it titled and registered and I'll be on the road!
