Have them magnafluxed to check for cracks, 882 heads are prone to cracking.

Go there. If they are thin 882s they are pure junk. Dont ever use them. If they are thick 882s they are a reliable head, but still just a smogger. They flow ok but are 76cc (i think all of them were but a few maybe were smaller?) 2.02/1.60 valves. Ive used them on a few engines and no complaints. They max out at about 375hp with as much modding as they will take. CoryM

While many people will say they are door stops, I'll say the other side of the story.
They are one of the best flowing smogger heads, and in reality, you're hard pressed to get anything better at a decent price. (and if they are bolt on ready to go...40 bucks is a good price) I have personally had mine up to 260 or so degrees and have never had a problem. (don't you hate throwing fan belts on the freeway?) The attachment shows how to tell a thin casting from a heavy casting. |

Thanks for the pic Andy. Cory told me earlier that the sides of the thin 882's were scalloped profile but it was hard to see what with the ramhorns and sparkplug heat shields in the way. Now I know what I'm looking for and can say I definitely have the thick wall 882's. BTW, I too had the temp up to 260 degrees on occasion. I was driving with a bad rad (bottom 1/4 was plugged) for a few years and everything held together just fine. But I did need to install a rad overflow tank,

Yeah, they are not nearly as bad as everyone makes them out to be...not that it is OK to run any head that hot...
