HELP! Carrier Bearing.

Called up to the O'Rielly's to check into getting a new carrier bearing and they said they had 2 types that would fit my truck (77 C10). One was a slip-yolk and I guess the other was a non-slip or something. Had them put my name on both of them and I will pick them up tomorrow.

1) Which one do I need? I'd rather just pay and pick up one than have to return one later when it doesn't work.

2) Also, I've never changed a carrier bearing before. I can usually look at it and put it back together again but messing with the driveshafts it intimidating. Anyone know how to replace one or any tips?

First thing, mark your shafts the way they are now in the truck, so they go back together in phase (lined up the way they are now). After that just pull the rear shaft off the pinion yoke, try not to drop the ujoint cups and throw bearing needles everywhere. Drop the hanger bearing. Remove the front shaft, whether it's a slip yoke or fixed yoke.

There will be a round cap on the end of the slip yoke behind the hanger bearing. You will probably have to unscrew this, then undo your slip yoke and seperate your shafts.

Hammer/pull/cut off the old hanger bearing and dust shield. Clean up the surfaces. Install the dust shield, then hammer on the hanger bearing, use a long punch on the inside race. Make sure how you take off the old one, as the new one should point the same way.

Reverse removal.

X2 if you have a slip yoke you'll have the large nut and probably a zerk. I had the bearing pressed off and then back on. Definately mark the shafts with a grease pencil or paint pen. I run tape around the u joints so they don't scatter after everything is out. Still have to be careful when you remove. You can do it!

what i usually do when i have it apart is to grease the u joints if they have zerks and if they dont at least the one that comes apart
