Re: My 62

Welcome to the forum. Easiest solution may be just a rear axle gear swap. Is your truck a Chevy or a GMC? Most of the 1/2 ton GMC's have Dana 44 rear axles and gear sets are plentiful since so many 4x4 & Jeep guys use them.

Another option is swapping in an overdrive transmission. I'm running a 350, Super T10 4 speed and 4.10 rear axle. Works fine in my situation since I rarely take the truck long distances or on the freeway, but if yours is a daily driver getting the rpms down will be much more practical.

Re: My 62

Its a Chevy with a 12 bolt, not a Dana.

Re: My 62

Unless you have overdrive, if you want pleasureable highway cruising and something to get you off the line I would go with 3:43. 3:73 I think are prefect, but only if you have overdrive. Just my .02.

Re: My 62

TKO 600 with a .64 OD best of both worlds , I run a 3.91 rear gear and this is a killer set up, not cheap but it works , and is far better than a t-5 out of a S 10 truck. At least for me that is. Those t 5 are extremely weak and where only put behind 305 in the firebirds, etc. Thoese broke often any ways.

Summit, jegs, most of the catalog dealers have them. Also try justdifferentials.com, they have them for $159.00 in several different gears sizes.

Re: My 62

If your truck still has the stock 1962 rearend , to my knowledge the only gear set available is a 3:38 I beleve in the aftermarket ... The rear mounting is also different on the Chevy 1960-1962 Rearends versus the 1963-1966 rearends . X-Frame versus conventional frame .. Otherwise as 1963c-10 stated , Gears are readily available for the chevy truck 12 bolt 8.875 rear ends .. Good Luck !!!
My 2 cents ...

Re: My 62

Thanks,......came from a farm in Georgia..bought it form a guy going into the Marines...I had it painted by a Nam chopper pilot 20 years ago...and the new used engine I just bought came from a Nam chopper door gunner. Small world...and it was featured in this Nam cooking video .{.at the start of the video only } http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=zJuMJlEPxjQ

heres a pic of the motor that threw a connecting rod..it was a nasty explosion with an awesome burst of black oil and smoke .I was lucky enough to have the truck roll up an expressway exit ..down a serve drive and into a parking lot..I had no idea what happened..till i looked under the hood.

Re: My 62

It's nice nothing worse happened when that let go, like taking out something important like a tire.

Many years ago a female coworker called me early in the morning before work, asking me to come to a nearby gas station where her car was up on the lift. Her car lost power on the way to work and she pulled in to have it checked. She was afraid the station attendent was trying to take advantage of her. I arrived, looked up, and easily confirmed the bad news since it looked just like yours.
