the not-so full wheel covers

Quick question. I'm a poverty cap kinda guy. A already have some of the full wheel covers (for a 72, although used in several other years) - but my question is this - are the ones in the pic below what you got if you did NOT get the full wheel covers (note, these are the 10.5" inchers for 1/2 ton - not the similar looking ones with blue bow tie for 3/4 tonners).

If NOT, can someone pls post a pic of the basic wheel cover in 72? This pic seems to match what I've seen and what I have in my memory, but never thought to ask.

Were the full wheel covers (i.e. not these) part of the cheyenne or cheyenne super package - or were they a separate option? In other words, I've seen some Cheyennes with the poverty caps - but never knew if the owner just put em on there because he liked them (like me).

Blue bowtie should just mean 67-72 for blue 73-76 for yellow. Three quarter and half are different diameter.

I think my 70 at the farm has those style caps on it. I'll see if I can find a picture.

that's kinda what I thought - the place I found the pic in post #1 showed that one for half ton (72) and this one below for 3/4 ton (i.e. the larger dia is for 3/4 ton as you'd expect). But I never noticed 73 and up were yellow - but I did seem to recall the 72 and belows were blue - so this particular site cornfused me (the one I found the hubcap pics on) - and of course the site could've been outta whack also - and I believe it is.

Anyhoo - I guess what I'm lookin for then is a 10.5" dia cap with blue bow tie - is THAT what should have been on a 1/2 ton 72 chev if no bright full wheel covers were ordered?

69-72 caps & covers got the blue bowtie, theres a link below to a thread on this same topic including some pics. Mel

All bowties on the trucks were blue from 69-72. That's on the front of the truck,in the horn cap,on hubcaps,in sales brochures...anywhere. Before that it was read and after that it was yellow...for all bowties on the truck.
Option code PO3 was the wheel covers,which was an option on all trucks*. Chrome hubcaps was standard on Cheyenne & Cheyenne Super and an option on Custom & Custom Deluxe. *I can't remember everything,so maybe Cheyenne Supers came standard with wheel covers. I'd have to check to be sure.

The blue/white 72 Super I used to own had the full wheelcovers listed on the SPID as an option.

The ochre 72 Super I have now lists chrome (I think they are actually stainless) hubcaps on the SPID, so I believe you could have gotten it either way.

The basic hubcap would just be painted standard. I know my truck has option for chrome hubcaps.

Here's a pic of what I'm now certain is the correct 72 chrome hubcap for a half-tonner (vice full wheel cover). Thanks for the color lesson - I did not know that.

I'm ASSUMING that the 73+ cap I posted in the first post is the SAME cap used in 72, but in 73 they just changed the color of the bow tie. I think....

So if in a bind and I could find the later ones, I could take a little paint to that guady yeller.....

I haven't found any 69-72 chrome caps, but I'm sure someone knows where I could find some. Any re-pop them that you know of?

You can buy the 69-72 caps off of the website you got the pictures from (www.hubcaps.org). They are not re-popped.

Problem is they haven't had any lately. If it says "Call to Order" under the picture they're probably out of stock.

I did grab a set of the full wheel covers off that site - price is "ok" but they restore them before they send them and they are NOS wheel covers. The ones they show are 73+ (yellow), but I have asked them, since they're gonna take some paint to em anyway - to either do them in the 69-72 color scheme or leave the color paint off altogether and I'll do it. Good company by the way - dealt with Josh, very helpful, and sounds like a good company.

As for the hubcaps - they were completely out of the yellow or blue of the ones posted. So, the search continues for the caps - really was looking for the caps there, but the wheel covers called my name...

I was right, our 70 has those on it. Old farm truck, only like 70k original miles, just doesnt show too well.



As far as i know, the 73-76 are the same except for color.

73-75 are the same. In '76 the last style of hubcaps came out.

Last year I got a set of (what I assume to be) N.O.S. 69-75 GMC wheel covers for $85! No boxes and they weren't said to be N.O.S. but that's what I'd call immaculate/mint wheel covers that show no signs of ever being mounted or removed.

Wow, nice snag Tim... if you purchased them on ebay then ya caught a bunch of us sleeping . I have a set of these as you call 69-75 GMC's tucked away also, all four are the 15" full cover fake lug nut type "All Metal" NOS in the original GMC boxes. Was told by a fairly reliable source that the early ones were all metal while the later production pieces were plastic centered. My GMC NOS set cost about six times the amount that you scored your set for. Mel

Mel,it was too good to be true...but it turned out true! There were bids inching up around $20-30 when I found them with about a day to go. I was pretty broke but had to give it a shot,as long as they really would be such a bargain.I sent the seller a message to ask if he'd accept a postal m.o. since I don't have PayPal,he accepted,I put in $100 max,and walked away. Low and behold,the next day I had the e-mail that I won. The other cheapo bidders bid their butts off at the end but only got it up to $85 and made me a happy man.

Yes,the early ones had metal centers and later went to plastic. I mostly come across nice used ones with faded plastic centers. The metal centers,like Chevys,are hard to find unpitted.

I'll say I was lucky! Like I said,I couldn't believe it (or did I? Anyway...). I figured it was too good to be true and the next day I'd get smoked in the last 15 minutes. I bid my max and intentionally didn't check until after it was done,so not to be tempted. I found the picture from the listing I had saved while looking for some wheel pictures yesterday. That's funny, I got mine for $85, too. But mine weren't in the great shape yours were in. They were dent-free though, which was the important part. A little elbow grease and paint brought mine back to life.

Holy COW. Why would someone pay that much for hubcaps? Especially when restored ones are available for much, much less. hubcaps.com, $70 apiece - your choice 69-72 paint trim or 73-75. (ok, don't answer that question - I've had similar wild hairs... But I'm just sayin, $805 whew!)

Btw, I did find some dogdishes, set of 4 for (69-72's) with blue bow tie for $110. One of the four had some dings - so I also bought a set of 2 (73-75's) for $59 that I can repaint the bow tie on.
Also got 4 unpainted ones (very "patina'ed" I guess you could say) for $109. I'm happy with them all - feel like I stole someone's lunch money. See what I mean about wild hairs? Guilty.

I will add that the 69-72 blue bowtie dogdish caps are actually chrome while the 73 and newer are stainless steel. The early caps are very prone to cracking where they snap on to the wheel.
