What type of differential do i have?

i am trying to find out what type of differential i have in my truck. i have a 71' GMC C-2500. it is 3/4 ton full floating rear end. this is all i know. it is original and i want to change the rear gears so it is more streetable. the truck is 2wd. i was once told it is probably a dana 60 and someone else said it was a GM 12 bolt. i don't know anything about differentials and need help finding out what rear end i have before i try to order new gears.
thanks for any help!

If it has a round cover on the back with a drop out differential assembly it's an Eaton HO72. If it has a non-round cover with a drain plug in the cover it is a Dana 60.

I think those are the only options for a 3/4 ton, but I don't know for sure.

Does it look like my avatar pic? If so it's a dana60. If it has a round cover and drop out center section it's a corperate axle. More likely the dana 60.

drop the cover, count the teeth on both pinion and the ring and then divide the pinion into the ring. You could probably use new oil anyway.

usually if no one has messed with your diff before, there should be a tag on one of the lower cover bolts that says the ratio and the number of teeth on each gear. I've seen quite a few and have a couple so they may be a good chance yours is still on there.

Never saw a tag on one, except on F&%d 8 inch and 9 inch. I have one with a 14 bolt cover. Was told the only gears available are 390, 411 and 456. Was further told to find one from 73 up with 8 lugs and it can be modified to work with my leaf spring Longhorn.
