Unfortunately,i do not have pics at the moment.

but,maybe you can tell me what gears i have in the rearend of my truck.

1982 c10 1/2 ton stepside.custom deluxe 5 lug, straight 6( i think it was a 292) with a 4 speed( granny low,1,2,3), with ac/power steering and manual brakes.

10 bolt rearend.

does anyone got a clue on which gears i may have?its all stock.

I was asking, as i didnt know if there was certain gears put in certain trucks, and if anyone knew for sure what might have been in my truck.

Usually 6 cylinders, at least in older trucks, had lower gears for torque. But in a 82, there isnt any real way of knowing. Try looking at the info decal inside glove box. Best thing is to just remove diff cover and count the gear teeth. Putting fresh gear oil in would benefit you anyways. Most people neglect that.

There was a big push for higher mpg in the 80's most trucks except the real heavy doty ones would come with 308 and 273 ratios mostly, from the factory.

There are some general guidelines and likely scenarios, like 74 stepside's example of 6-cylinder engines having lower gears for torque. But there are a number of different gear ratios in each and all the various axles, yours included. The 10-bolt came in a variety of gear ratios for your year.

If you can't decipher it from the various information stickers on your truck, then you'll have to do it the old-fashioned way. Either jack up the wheel and rotate it by hand while you count the rotations of the driveshaft, or pull the differential cover and count the teeth.

jack it up and spin the wheels one rotation and count how many times the drive shaft turns. if it turns about 2 3/4 times then it's a 2.73, if it turn almost 3 1/2 times then 3.42. there are other gear ratios i was just giving examples

base RPO GQ1 is 2.73:1; Optional GU4 is 3.08.

Of course, this assumes that no one has changed it in the meantime. If you still have the SPID label, the base axle RPO will probably not appear but the optional RPO normally will.

Also, if you are really desparate to know not only your axle RPO but all of the options your truck was built with, you can send your VIN (and $50) to the Heritage Center and they will send you the invoice for your specific truck.

The distinctive thing about that thread is not so much discovery of axle codes and related paraphenalia, but HOW LONG it took me to get the info and how neurotic i am (apparently). i did not work on it everyday constantly---i looked into it, then moved on to different "projects" and then came back to it. Perhaps i have focus problems.


2) If you take your VIN# to the dealer (and this may depend on how good your dealer is) they can type it into the computer and look up what rear axle ratio came with the truck.

NOTE: With the passed "old gm"/"new gm" horseflop they might not be able to do it for you. (can't imagine why?).

I did not mean for this to be some stupid non sense thread, i figured maybe out of the factory certain trucks came with a standard set of gears.I didnt know that every truck had completely different gears basically.You know like certain years with certain engines would have XXX gears and this year with this engine would have XXX gears. but thanks for the people who actually tried helping.

You are correct; in the interest of brevity I was not totally precise (but figured someone was going to call me out on it! - lol).

Here now, the revised version:

a) For base/standard axle - the SPID will show the RPO code "GQ1" but not the actual ratio (because it varies based on all the other stuff we usually talk about -powertrain combination, tires, gvw, etc).

b) For an optional ratio - it will show the RPO code and the actual ratio, because that relationship always stays the same.

You are welcome; they do generally have the same gearing (Insidious pretty much nailed it).

It's just nice to refer back to the powertrain chart, because that is the authority that we use to actually release the parts to the truck.

i forgot how i found out---maybe the when the dealer looked it up, but GQ-1 standard axle ratio for 83 was/is 2.56. Other years it may have been 2.73 or......?
