Removal of axle bearing help? 14 bolt ff
So I got the rear axle out, like I said I'm doing a westernchassisinc.com drop for it, but first I now am doing a rear disc brake conversion. I took the big drums and brakes off, and pounded the studs out of the hub. Now i got the seal, outer bearing, and an inner snap ring out. How do i get the inner bearing out? I can't seem to figure it out. Also how do I find out what my gearing is?

You have to press it out from the side that the axleshaft bolts to, towards the side that the snap ring is on.

For ratio, look on the OD of the ring gear. There should be some numbers stamped on there. If all else fails, count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that by the number of teeth on the pinion gear.
12-41 = 3.42 11-41 = 3.73 10-41 = 4.10 9-41 = 4.56 8-39 = 4.88 8-41 = 5.13 |

If you're doing a conversion to disc brakes, why are you worried about removing the bearing from the drum? I would spend the extra $10 to $20 and buy brand new bearings.
Just my opinion. |

I bought brand new bearings, but I was still wanting to figure out how to get the old ones out of the hub, don't i use the same hub to attach to the new rotor???

I guess that would depend upon what conversion kit you're using to make the switch to disks, and what they recommend.
I'm not familiar with any of the kits for the full-floating 14 bolt, but from other disk conversions I've done, they include the hubs, rotors, housing brackets for the calipers, etc etc etc. No need to reuse any of the old parts. Hopefully someone else will chime in, or check with your conversion kit supplier -- they should be able to tell you if you need to reuse your hub or not. |

brass punch and tap it out. or go buy the special kit made for tapping bearings out. A google seach will pull up lots of info with pics and instructions.

You did the hard part when you pulled out the snap-ring. The bearing drives through the hub.

flip the hub over from the pic and drive it out with a small punch, the snap ring its the backside and it holds it from falling in to the inner part towards the inner bearing

Just did that when I did a four wheel disc conversion on my crew cab project. Post 50 if you want to check it out.

Re: Removal of axle bearing help? 14 bolt ff
Thanks guys for all the help. I got the bearings out, and for the install of the new ones once I get all my disc brakes conversion stuff in, I will be getting a bearing driver set. So that should make it a lot smoother. Thanks for the tips and the vid!
