clear coat on bed wood.

Does anyone know how much automotive clear coat I would need to spray my lwb bed wood? I have a quart laying around and I'm hoping that will be enough? Also, any application thoughts? Or just spray till it's gone?

dont use automotive clear it wont hold up!!!use clear polyurethane its harder and will hold up!!

Probably need around 3 quarts. Make sure you coat all sides, holes grooves ETC.

I used marine grade varnish on mine. 3 coats. The same stuff they use on boat wood. Beads real nice.

My 2 cents, XtechX. you don't say whether your bedwood is currently raw (unsealed) or whether it will be constantly exposed to the elements.

if it's only for show, and covered or inside most of it's life, then I guess it doesn't matter. although even inside a garage, unsealed wood is constantly gaining or losing moisture according to fluctuations in humidity. moisture is what messes with wood.

if it's going to see weather and it's currently unsealed, then putting a topcoat on it will be a waste of time, in my opinion, based on my experience with wood in/on boats. if it's a urethane clear, then it might do fine as a sealer, but you'll need a lot more than 1 quart, since you have to apply 'til the wood doesn't absorb any more.

Even a good marine urethane varnish will offer only limited protection. Owners of boats with exposed wood routinely practice maintenance.

if you need a sealer, classicchev's point is absolutely right on the money.

SIKKENS cetol marine natural teak...AWESOME stuff. Three to four coats all sides light sand between coast and you will get a great lloking durable UV protected finish.
