Passenger side door wont shut/latch

I went out to my truck to day to grab something out of it and when I went to shut the door, It just bounced open. After a few slams, I noticed the gear in the latch just spins regardless of the door latch being pressed. I finally got the idea to get in the truck and press the door lock as the door shut and that worked to get it closed. What could this be? Maybe it just needs some lubrication?

Re: Passenger side door wont shut/latch

theres a little latch if your looking at the gear its on the right side towards the outside of the door its kinda behind the metal of the door. it only lets that gear spin one way, it prob stuck open so it doesnt catch the gear and i think theres a spring on it also maybe some white litheum grease or wd40 and work the door handle might loosen it up

If you roll the window down you can see the door latch and lock with a flashlight, through the window opening. Spray it with a good penetrating oil (not WD-40). If this doesn't fix it you need to replace the latch.
