HUBCAP SPECS for 8 lug wheels

Just wondering the typical specs on 8 lug truck hubcaps and what the differences and applications are for each style. 8 lug, 6 lug, 5 lug, etc. Steelies, rally's etc. Pics and any insight would be greatly appreciated... Thanks guys and gals!

Re: HUBCAP SPECS for 8 lug wheels

You mean what is the diameter? 5-lug and 6-lug are the same...right about 10.5" and all 8-lugs are about 12". This is for outer nub type. Inner clip type are obviously different.

Re: HUBCAP SPECS for 8 lug wheels

Here's a great ref that someone posted in a thread I started a while back. This shows all the caps for early-mid 70's (but not rally wheel caps, sorry). Yellow bow tie are 73+, blue bow tie are 69-72. Not pictured are the different caps (with red bow tie) for 67-68.

Note that what appear to be some identical caps in the same pic are actually the 2 different diameters for 5/6 lug vs. 8 lug as mentioned above. Hope this helps. One nuance is to note (in the 69-72 blue bowtie pic is that the left 2 caps are a good depiction of the differences between 5/6 lug and 8 lug wheels. Upper left is 8 lug with a concave (bulging) center bowtie while the lower left is 5/6 lug with a convex (sinking) center bowtie. Same can be seen on the upper right and lower right of the same picture. Kinda have to stare at it for a second to see it, like one of those weird pics from the 80's... I do not see the same design feature in the 73+ wheels.

This is a common misconception on '69 thru '72 GMC caps. Yours are the '73-'75 stainless editions, (no black center section). The correct chrome 69-72 is shown on this link .http://www.gmcguy.com/gmc_hubcaps_wh..._and_rims.html

Not meaning to nit-pick this, but to just to clarify. Convex is "buldging" and concave is "sinking" , recessed or cupped. Convex is correct for the 69-72s.

Re: HUBCAP SPECS for 8 lug wheels

I finally located a set of these (painted variety) in a junkyard for my 3/4 ton. Any tips on how to repaint these? I see some tedious detail brush painting in my future, correct?

Re: HUBCAP SPECS for 8 lug wheels

Masking tape,Exacto knife and spray paint gives the closest to OEM look, since they used a stencil and spray. If you want tedious, try repainting the wheel cover centers. See that yellow ring? Yeah, that and the tiny bowtie need to be painted. Been there, done that.

Thumbs up Re: HUBCAP SPECS for 8 lug wheels

Thanks Tim. That makes more sense than a detail brush in my shaking hands.
