14 bolt swap?

Well, I went to take the truck out for a drive the other day. As I was backing out the driveway and the truck jolted and I heard a clunk. I got out and looked under the truck to see if I hit something, but to my surprise the diff was leaking. I went to the back and I see a dent in the diff cover. So, wanting to know what was up, I removed the cover and found a washer shaped magnet sitting just below the ring gear. Along with the magnet was a small chunk of gear. Turns out its a piece of the spider gears. So now that my rear is down I thought now would be a good time to upgrade to a full float 14, instead of fixing the semi float.
My question is what is involved? I know the E brake cable is different, what about the U joint or the way it is connected?

Re: 14 bolt swap?

The u joint is a 1350 on the ff 14. Alot of people swap out the heavy drums with a disc brake swap. There is a specific late 70s Cadillac rotor that you can use to retain the e-brake or just use the stock 3/4 rotor with out it.

You will need a longer drive shaft if you swap from a semi-float 14 to a full-float 14. A 12 bolt or a 14 bolt ff drive shaft will work the sf 14 uses a shorter drive shaft.

spider gear replacement is not that expensive to put your truck back on the road

Re: 14 bolt swap?

As far as I know it is just a bolt in process. The differential uses straps on the differential I believe the same as the semi-floater. The only problem I could see is if the rear diff will match your front for the gear set. (if it is coming out of the bone yard)

Depending on what the 14BFF comes out of you may need to change the spring perches.

Re: 14 bolt swap?

Here's my 14b swap http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=481550

I used a newer full floater from an 05 or 06 i think and it uses the big 1410 u-joint and i cannot find a jump joint from whatever my stock drive shaft uses to that size so i'm converting my rear end stuff to 1410, my drive shaft will need to be lengthened when switching to this rear end as well

Here's some a solution for those not wanting to spend $$$ on a newer axle and wanting a real parking brake not a transfer case brake or the car stuff which i consider cheap, also if using the old FF's you shouldn't have to move the perches like i did if you find the correct one though, the article is here http://www.fourwheeler.com/departmen...#ixzz1OeVOKTYn

The actual website, although its not posted you'll have to email or call them http://www.rightgear.com/

Thanks to old yelr on that one

Re: 14 bolt swap?

I ended up just fixing the semi floater. Turns out there was a spacer missing on the pin, and it sheared. Just goes to show you you never know what the PO did to your truck.

I still bought the full float, going to rebuild it and find a dana 60 for the front, then swap them out when they are done.
