late model fans on a 2000
I have been wondering if it's much trouble converting the engine driven fan on the 2000 GMC to the later model dual electric fan setup from say an 06. The mounting part should be a snap. It's the wiring I'm more concerned about. Obviously it won't be a plug n play deal. I know I could buy an aftermarket controller to run them but I'd really like it to wire up and work like the factory setup. A clean factory installed look.
Does the computer control the fan cycling or is it just controlled by the temp sensor? Have any of you done this?

Re: late model fans on a 2000
Well after some reading I see the later efan trucks have a 34" wide radiator. I guess I'll have to do some measuring.
My interest in the swap was sparked when we bought the 06 crew. The thing is quiet and the engine seems to warm up quicker than my 2000. I like that.

The ECM controls the fans, You can have the feature turned "on" in you ECM with a custom tune. Add some wires & relays.

Re: late model fans on a 2000
I went to the wrecking yard and picked up a set of LS1 fans. I've been running them since 2004 with no issues. wired in with 1 relay per fan. they are always on and work well. No need for the 34". These with a 160° thermostat, I never get above 170°

Re: late model fans on a 2000
Nelson Perfomance sells a harness to allow you to use GM factory (LS1 or truck fans) or aftermarket fans and control them from the PCM. As stated above you have to the feature turned on in the PCm, but then the fans will operate correctly with temp and A/C. The fans running all the time defeats the purpose of having e-fans in my opinion, you are not getting the faster warm ups and they are dragging down the alternator/batt all the time... just my .02

Re: late model fans on a 2000
I agree. The fans do not need to run all the time and these engines are tuned to operate best @195*. This ready made harness is what I'm talking about. Would Nelson Performance.com get me there?
