Front Swap Question (mounts)

I used the search function with inconclusive results.

The Project: I want to use a 1984 4x4 Cab and front sheet metal on a 1979 4x4 frame.

The Question: Where the radiator support bolts to the frame, is there a height difference in the frame mounts (riveted to frame) between the 73-80 and 81-87 frame? What issues will I run into here? I only have a 79 K20 frame for reference for now. I'll be swaping the 1984 cab and front sheet metal as a unit and will not have to worry about the wipers and other common swap issues that I have read about. Just looking for info relating to the 1984 radiator mounting to the 1979 frame. Thanks!

Re: Front Swap Question (mounts)

I've done that swap twice before and never had any issues with the radiator support. Just use the body mounts for the year of the frame.

Thumbs up Re: Front Swap Question (mounts)

Zebb,

Thanks for the response. I was hoping that would be the case. I plan on doing the swap this week and will post my results.

Re: Front Swap Question (mounts)

The front bumper mounts differently too because of the horn on the front of the frame. I modified my newer brackets to work before.

This is an 86 on a 79 2wd frame. I haven't gotten to the bumper yet.

Thumbs up Re: Front Swap Question (mounts)

The 1984 cab and front sheet metal are now swapped onto the 79 frame. There are no fitment issues, no modifications needed. All six of the 1979 rubber body mounts and bolts were used with the exception of the radiator support bolts. The 79 bolts were too short. Using the 84 radiator support bolts with the 79 rubber mounts worked here.

In short, if doing a swap like this, use the rubber mounts for the frame being used NOT the cab.
