3 Speed OD

Just got the trans back from being rebuilt. Now all I have to do is try to get it in I have gotten lots of advice here about that and I am very appreciative for that. I was wondering if anyone has a pic or knows where to get a accelerator kick down switch. I would like to see a pick and then maybe I could fab one up somehow or just get one. I don't even know how they were attached or even where. Up higher on the arm? Was it a button or an actual switch? Let me know fellas! I know you guys got the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yea anybody know how to ID the year? Thanks All!

JEL 111:
Those trannies are sweet. I have the later model with syncro first and really like it. Here are some links that may have what you are looking for on a switch:

http://www.classictruckshop.com/club...cts/how_to.htm

http://www.classictruckshop.com/club...5n/rebuild.htm

The Stovebolt discussion above has a NAPA switch that someone adapted. I haven't put a kickdown switch on mine for a couple of reasons. I have a Cole Hersey push/pull on/off switch on the dash that I can use to kick out the O/D if I need to (very seldom do, however). The kickdown switch is designed to momentarily ground the coil so that the transmission can "release" the overdrive. I have an HEI on my truck and I didn't want to take a chance with grounding an HEI coil.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Steve

JEL111

What type of transmission is that? Muncie/Saginaw/Borg?

Also, on the tailshaft, have you been able to determine what THREE STAMPINGS indicate?

Re: 3 Speed OD

I believe that it is a borg. I haven't been able to date it or figure out what all the numbers mean. I bought it out of the car and got just what you see. I had it rebuilt and the guy added the od arm. I now know, thanks to slorio for the links, that it is configured wrong and i will have to make it right myself. The guy I bought it from and he said it was out of a 57 chevy bel aire.

Re: 3 Speed OD

Sept 26, 1957 is your date code, I believe for the tranny main housing. I have a similar one, that I have been trying to identify before seeing your post.

I am still trying to figure out what the codes on the tailhousing unit mean.

Also, do you have any notes on the oil seals (side cover) and (rear tailshaft) that were used in your re-build? Source for purchase of these seals?

Thanks,

Randy

Re: 3 Speed OD

Rd I do not. I will try to find out for you though. I just have to make a call and see where the trans guy I took it to git the gaskets and such. Thanks again for the great info! I think it will help a lot. It is giving me the confidence to take this on myself instead of farming it out. Oh I just scored a OD unit for inside the cab! It is the original (I think) engage thing a ma bob. The cover is broken hopefully I can do something about that to make it better!

I know a guy that took a Saginaw 3-speed overdrive plantery and put it on a saginaw car 4-speed. Works great. He has it in a 57 belair. Makes a world of difference when you are running 456 gears.Google saginaw 4-speed overdrive and it will tell you about it.I think your 7 bolt side plate was the fully syncronized. And the module cap was plastic than metal with the older ones.Newer ones are very tough to come by. GOOD LUCK
