How hard would it really be

ok im just curious how hard you guys really think it would be to go to the local pick-n-pull and find me a 700r4 or a 2004r trans for my truck. I plan on using my tax return to buy an auto trans to put behind my inline 6 but i am thinking for daily driver use i want the overdrive. i plan on going to the pick-n-pull this week to do some searching cause they told me i could get a trans for $160 so how scarce or abundant are they and what kind of vehicles are they commonly found in.

find as late of a model as you can , they had all the problems worked out of them by then ....early 90s trucks would be the best bet , look for a clean one it may have been rebuilt..........

Just remember when looking for the newer transmissions - as they got into mid-90's, they switched to electronic speedo hookup. Might not want one THAT new, but just slightly older would be perfect - still new, but not too new. I don't know exactly what year 700R4's switched to electonic speedos, but manual trans's did it around 93-ish.

Re: How hard would it really be

Somewhere in 11994-1996 they went to the electronic version now called the 4L60 or 80. What I was told to look for 3 things,1: the detent or "kickdown" cable, 2: mechanical speedo, 3: the 4 wire square plug just behind the shift arm above the pan. As far as application, the light pickup version would be my choice, too, suggest a 1987-1992. Also full-size and Astro vans also used them. If you do not have one-make sure to get the driveshaft or at least the front portion so you'll have the slipyoke. A TH350 yoke will also work. Good luck!
