Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
hi. i've been lurking here for a while and finally got the inspiration to tackle my suburban. it's a '72 2x4 with a few dings, but it came from Nevada and has almost no rust. i few years ago, i stuffed a 427 truck engine into it but never got the final few parts (carb and truck distributer) for it.
well, it's time to get back to work on it. i read a couple of threads about the 4x4 conversion and have a friend with 1 ton runnin' gear. think i'll go down that road. thinkin' i'm gonna need some help here and there. Monty Last edited by Monty; 06-06-2011 at 11:03 PM. Reason: spelling |

Good luck on your build! You'll have to post some pictures of your burb as you go through the processes.

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
yea, i have a bud here that has a Dana 60 front end and 14 bolt rear i'm trying to get. should be straightforeward once i get the parts. i've been running 67-72 chevys since my first truck ('72 GMC 1/2 T).
i always wanted to do a build like this but never had the space or $$$. now my only logistics problem is when i put the 4x4 under it, it'll be too big to fit my garage... Monty Last edited by Monty; 06-13-2011 at 07:48 PM. |

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
yea, the upper Shields. sorry about the edit on that post, but i thought i was getting away from the topic (like i have a tendency of doin'). the downside of that area is the vehicle/deer collisions take a heavy toll on older trucks.

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
Hi, Pope. very good to hear from you. hope things are well.
the truck is comming along ok. got the 2wd front crossmember/axles stripped out and the Dana 60 installed on 52" springs. the rear end is in progress. the Eaton/trailing arms are gone and the 14 bolt is sitting there, but not bolted in yet. i'm using 64" springs in the rear and while i have the rear spring mounts whipped (via a DIY4X shackle flip kit), i'm looking for a suitable front spring mount for the rear springs. i may have to fab something. today, i got the auto trans steering column replaced with one from a manual trans and put the pedal assy. with clutch in. |

Everything is fine here. Counting down the weeks till we are outa here, really getting anxious! What gear ratio did your eaton have?

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
glad your tour is getting short.
i dunno about the ratio. i'll look at it if you want. i never drove the sub. i bought it less engine for a project. it was behind a 350/350. |

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
Sure, if you think about it when you are out that would be great. I am still running an eaton, but it has 4.57 gears, and would like to buy a set of 4.10 gears to help get my rpm down a little.

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
ok, i think i have the 3.73 gear set in this one. the option plate in the glove box doesn't list a special order ratio. is there a code stamped somewhere?
if not, i'll pull the pumpkin and check for ya. whatever it is, it's yours if you want it. |

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
Cool! thanks for checking! If it is an Eaton H050 or H072 I have never seen a tag on one my self but there may be one attached to a third member bolt or one of the rear cover bolts. 3.73 gears would be perfect, but i think that the Eaton rears only went as high as 4.10 factory. There was an aftermarket 3.90 ratio available a while back though...

41 ring gear teeth. is that enough info? i just pulled the cover and couldn't see the pinion teeth.

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
Sorry I couldn't say, without pinion count since 11 pinion teeth would give it 3.73 gears and 10 would give you 4.10. Thanks for checking into it!

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
i just pulled the guts out of it and counted 10 teeth on the pinion. should be what you are looking for.
if you are going to change the pinion seal, i can run the third member through the Proceeco (parts washer) at work and get it cleaned up. it is a alkiline solution under high pressure and 185* |

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
That would be great. I Would end up changing the seal before putting it in for sure. I really appreciate ya doing all that. I do feel that you should get some payment for all of this, or at least a case of beer!

Re: Newb with '72 Sub 3/4T 2x4
nope. don't want nothin' for it. i was gonna have to scrap it but i'd much rather give stuff to someone that can put it to use.
and free will keep us out of trouble on the board here. i'll run it through the Proceeco tomorrow and bag it up when it's dry. just lemme know when you get back and well get it to you it looks to be in pretty decent shape inside. |
