Oil Under Distributor Cap

OK, I have motor oil coating everything undcer my distributor cap. Is it most-likely the inner distributor seal? It's a 250 6-cyl. with XXX miles on it. Anyone had this problem? Thanks!

do you have a proper PVC system on your engine// pressure makes things leak at the point of least resistance

^This^ Plus your shaft bushings may be worn out allowing oil to slip on by.

Re: Oil Under Distributor Cap

I have a new PCV valve and a good breather cap, well, I assume that everything is good. PCV valve mounted in valve cover, connected to vacuum stub under carb and oil breather cap on front of valve cover. Aftermarket chrome valve cover, so I assume that provides for proper circulation.
How does the factory PCV system connect?

Re: Oil Under Distributor Cap

Gosh, I hate give up my points distributor because it's so fool-proof, but an HEI would be nice. Do I just need a dizzy from a 74-on 250?

Re: Oil Under Distributor Cap

OK, I just figured-up what it would take to convert to HEI, getting all parts at AutoBone.
For a reman HEI dizzy, w/module, no cap or coil - $92.00, not too bad.
But then I added up everything else I would need, cap, coil, plug wires, plugs and of course, spare module. Grand Total: $199.00.
I can get a reman points dizzy from AutoBone for $38.00 and I have all the peripherals.
For the cost difference I think I can make it run almost as nice as an HEI by setting the gap and dwell carefully and setting the vacuum by adjusting the carb mixture.
As much as I like HEI, that $150 saved would probably be better spent somewhere else on this old truck.

Re: Oil Under Distributor Cap

I paid $25.00 for the HEI at the JY and got lucky that everything worked on it.I probably got lucky since everything on the dist worked and the cap was nearly new.I've since changed it.
