chevy 4 speed transfer case addaption
i am hopefully getting a 73-87 k20 longbed frame and axles this spring. i have a heavy duty 4 speed transmission with the grany low gear, now i am wondering if those transmissions have a port where a transfer case can be bolted on to convert into a 4x4? this setup is destined to have a 350 smallblock with a 67 chevy cab on it with a flatbed. anyone that could help me out , it would be appreciated.

Here is all the info you need for a sm465. If you need to convert it to a 4wd set up they should have everything you need or can point you in the right direction. It should need a differnt output shaft i personally have not priced one but to be honest you could probaly get a sm465 with correct 4wd extension housing and shaft way cheaper from the junkyard. Hope this helps |

Re: chevy 4 speed transfer case addaption
yes every little bit helps. i had a chance to look at my tranny today and in one of the number codes on the casting it had 465 in the begining of one of the number codes. so i am hoping it is a SM465

Re: chevy 4 speed transfer case addaption
the sm465 is the commonly used chevy manual trans mission. do you know what it came out of ?? if it has a tail housing with a yoke its out of a 2wd it can be changed for a 4wd but its a little work, not too bad tho depending on your skill level. If you want a 4 speed it might be easier to just get one out of a 4wd, there pretty common. depending on your axle gearing and tire size you might want to go with the NV4500, its a overdrive 5 speed, you will still have "granny" and you will get better highway MPG's. Re: chevy 4 speed transfer case addaption
i actually aquired the tranny when i bought my 84 chev it was in the bed , and been sitting on a skid in my back yard for a year now. i am not sure the year or make it came out of but it has no transfer case and just a yoke with a short tail shaft housing.i am not worried about highway use or mpg it is supposed to be strictly an around town wheeler. i am trying to find a 3/4 ton chassie with axles {preferably 4:10 gears}.
