Paint remover and SPID

My SPID is painted over. Will paint remover remove paint AND the text on the SPID? There is no guarantee it is the original glove box lid but curiosity has the best of me with this truck.

Re: Paint remover and SPID

I'd be very careful and just lightly rub it in by hand then rub it off quickly. The SPID is covered by a piece of plastic. If it appears you are deteriorating the thin plastic film over the SPID, I'd stop. I guess you could look at it this way - if you destroy it, you'll know no less about the truck than you know right now... The I'd just use a paint thinner and not a stripper - mildest solutions first.

True that, I really don't have much too lose! Thanks!

Re: Paint remover and SPID

What year is it? They didn't have the clear laminate over the spid until 71 i think. If it is the older one, you are probably out of luck. If it has the clear over it, you may get lucky with some thinner.

CRIPES!!! Thanks too much stuff. Twouvakind! Come baaaacccckkkk.....

(hopefully he's not out in the garage loading the garden pressure sprayer with turpentine as we speak....)

But still, if the choice is to leave it painted over and know nothing, or to ruin it trying, I guess I'd go for it still. But thanks for posting too much stuff - I learned something new.

Re: Paint remover and SPID

Yeah there's no plastic over my SPID on the 69'er.
The PO did a nice job masking it off when they changed the color from olive green to hugger orange.

You can't beat a responsible previous owner, mine was not concerned with masking. But might have been concerned at "masking" the fact that the truck is not a factory AC cab.
It is a 72 C-10 so I have the plastic overlay. We'll see what happens.

Re: Paint remover and SPID

No plastic on my 70 either, but it's mint. Weird how some deteriorate so much more than others.

In any event, whatever you wind up trying to remove the paint with, try a few test spots at the bottom first where there's less likely to be important printing to see what it does to the paper.

Re: Paint remover and SPID

. . . .

I've had good results using gasoline for removing overspray on "delicate" surfaces - it's not quite as strong as thinner.

As said above, try a little of it on a corner first.

Re: Paint remover and SPID

mine was painted over on a 72. when we tried a little thinner to see if paint would come off the whole SPID fell aprt where we had used it. so after that point i went ahead and removed the whole thing. i hate that i couldn't ever see it but oh well i'm not building a truck to original so i figured it didn't matter anyways. i think it looks better gone than it did painted black and curling up.
