73-87 steering column in '68 c10?

Has anyone done this? I was thinking that I could convert the place for the ingition on the dash into a place for a cigarette lighter port, given that the one I'm looking at is one with an ignition on the column. I try to look for columns...even the van ones, but I haven't had any luck finding a decent one that looks stock.

Re: 80's Suburban steering column in '68 c10?

There is one member somewhere that took the lock cylinder out and blended in the hole to remove it and it worked just the same. The length of the column is the same as is the way it is mounted. I currently have an 83 column in my truck just mounted up to i can steer it. This is at very least a good way to solve the problem while you look for another column. One thing about this that really spoke to me with using a later column was that the column will lock in place which can help avoid theft. I am thinking about using both locks, the one on the column for its lock and ignition, as well as the original key.

Re: 80's Suburban steering column in '68 c10?

I just went to a local Pick and Pull and got both a near mint condition seat and a decent steering column from an '84 GMC Suburban. If everything works the way I want, I'll be saving at least 400 bucks by going this route.

Maybe I ought to change the thread title to "73-87 Column in a '68?" I can't seem to change it though.

Re: 73-87 steering column in '68 c10?

I did one in my 71 back in 2003, can't remember muck except that I had to space it down a bit, but works good though. It was a 73 column, my dash is still just a key hole, may put a push button start in the old key hole.

Re: 73-87 steering column in '68 c10?

Cadillac and Olds had some real nice columns back in the 60s and 70s. Tilt and telescopic both, ignition switch still in the dash. Yeah it would take some work but they'd sure be nice up in one of our trucks.

What would be the benefit of putting one of these in your truck?

Tilt and telescopic for more adjustability without spending an arm n leg for one of the aftermarket columns.

Re: Here's one in my 72

Works ok but looks odd where the larger tube meets the guage cluster.

Ya it fit like 72 said but a bit of trimming and I think I added a spacer because it doesn't quite fit the hole right, I did it back in 2003 the first time I bought the truck.
