i keep breaking carrier bearings in my 68, the truck is bagged so i know that is part of the problem, but i was told by my driveine guy that the truck needs a spline shaft between the carrier and the rear end, my driveline does not have that. do i have the wrong driveline?

what are you guys doing about carrier bearings in bagged trucks?

i was told not to use a one piece due to vibration issues.

I picked up a slip shaft driveline but I needs to be shortened, if I shorten the front one with the carrier on it will I need to shorten the rear??

First you have to have the front shaft the right length so that it fits the truck with the trans you have. That is, with about 3/4 of an inch of the yoke showing at the transmission the carrier sits on it's bolt holes and bolts up.

Then, you have to have the rear section the right length so that the slip yoke is up on the splines the right distance but doesn't bottom out in the rear end travel.

The other option is that you leave your front half as is and have the drive shaft shop build you a rear half with a slip yoke in it that looks like this example that was on my 1-1/2 ton.

The cross on the yoke hooks to the front half of the driveshaft and the slip yoke allows for movement. Something like this is standard on the front driveshaft and maybe both driveshafts of almost all full size solid axle Chevy 4x4 trucks from the 60's through 1987. To me that would be the simple and best fix.

Make sure your U joints are in phase though as if they are out of phase they will cause a vibration that can be rough on the center supports.
