Matching numbers

Hi Guy's
Fairly new to the forum as well as ownership of a 73 C10 but curious to know how to clarify matching numbers, my engine number doesn't match that of the VIN, thought maybe someone could possibly help here, the eng no is
VO125TJZ, also should I expect to find digits from the Vin on the trans and rear axle.

Thanks guy's

Re: Matching numbers

Engine tag and vin tag are different. The engine should be a 72-73 block to be correct

Hi, thanks, are the blocks date coded like the casting number above the bellhousing area, it's an 010 by the casting.

Re: Matching numbers

Hi tuffss,

Most engines were also stamped with a partial VIN that should match the vehicle it was installed in at the factory. It's often right next to that "V0125TJZ" engine assembly code you already found/decoded.

But sometimes the partial VIN was stamped down on the side of the block near the oil filter. The ones stamped in that location can be rather hard to read since it was stamped on a rough cast surface.

Yes, the transmissions were usually stamped with both an assembly/date code along with a partial VIN. I don't think the rear axles were stamped with a partial VIN though ... just gear ratio & date/plant code.

Although it's for 67-69 Camaros, this page shows the locations of the assembly/date codes as well as the partial VINs on both the engine & trans --> http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml

Correct, Ray - no VIN on the rear axle.
