Starter Questions
Hello - I am in the midst of (well, I will when I get home from work), pulling out the starter in my 72 C10 Stepper. It has the 350/TH400. My question is with so many different starter options out there (regarding flywheel and shimming, etc.), how do you know which flywheel you have with out pulling the tranny out? Is it stamped somewhere? Currently, my starter just kind of semi-turns and cuts out...sort of like a "hum". Battery is fully charged, and no dice. I have Sanderson shortie headers now to help with the proximity to heat issue that the long tube headers gave, but I think this starter has seen its last days.
My question is how do I know which one I need? 153 or 168? Ideally, I would like to pickup the starter, go home, remove the old one, install the new one, and be done with it. But I am not certain which flywheel I have.

as far as I know, the only true way to tell is turn the wheel and count teeth. im sure theres other ways

Practically all the trucks use the 168 tooth flywheel. It has the stagard bolt patern while the smaller flywheel uses a starter with the bolts in line & a bracket at the end. If you like doing stuff yourself those are not hard to work on. Sounds like you need a new starter drive. Clean the starter up & put in a set of brushes. If you buy a reman do not turn in the old starter till the job is done & you are satisfied.

502ms, can you get under the truck & see what exactly happens when you (or a helper if your arm isn't long enough...) turn the key? Does the armature turn but not swing to engage the flex plate? Is it engaging the flex plate & but not turning it? It could be as simple as a new solenoid and/or a new Bendix. It's a super easy fix & as long as you're there, change the brushes & brass bushings. All this usually makes the starter like new again.

i'd clean up all 4ends of the battery cables and where they mount first b4 removing starter for replacement
