9in for sale

I was on craigslist and found an ad for a 9in from a 79 Bronco for sale and was curious if anyone has used one in one of their trucks. It says it is a complete rearend with brakes, detroit locker, 65 inch WMS to WMS from 79 Bronco, 3:50-1 ratio, 1 axle needs new seal. asking 575.00. I was hoping someone could tell me if this sounded like a good price, and what all I would need to look for, and whether or not this will work in my truck. The truck is a 67 swb stepside with a turbo 400, and a big block.

Thanks, Zak

Re: 9in for sale

Yes , i have used 2 of these . I always narrow mine as i dont have a fullsize . These should be heavy duty housing with big bearings , 31 spline , full size brakes and with 3.50 gear both i pulled apart had rebuildable limited slips . With the limited slip even if you go spool you can sell the posi and recoop some money .

Re: 9in for sale

The 12 bolt that is in your '67 is 62" wide, so that 9" is a bit wider.

Re: 9in for sale

Thanks for the replies. Right now I am on the fence as to whether or not I should go ahead and rebuild the 12 bolt I have or upgrade to a 9 inch. I'm hoping to make more power in the future, so the 9 inch seems like the good choice. But money's tight right now, so I don't which to choose.

If you're comparing stock units, the 12 bolt will probably hold up better, and depending on how much power you plan to make it may be cheaper to build out. The 9-inch rears that you see in a lot of drag cars do not have much in common with their stock rearend brethren.

Re: 9in for sale

Well right now, the 396 is just going to be a simple 10.5:1, pro comp aluminum heads, and decent hydraulic roller. Hopefully a blower, or 502 swap will be in order, but I just want a rear end that can handle 450-500hp from the 396 reliably until a moser or currie unit can be ordered up. If I rebuild the 12 bolt, it's going to get new ring & pinion, posi, installation kit, and seals, which I think should handle it alright.

I know, I have made that call too. The bad is I do not think my 12 bolt will hold up too what I am going to throw at it. If it does not then I just threw $1400 out the window. So, think I am going to save the money an do everything right about July or August. By then I should be getting ready to put it on the road.

Re: 9in for sale

The 12 bolt is a 8.875 ring gear and the 9 inch is well 9" , the 9 also has 3 pinion bearings and a removable case . 9 inch is my choice .

Also the 9 ich parts are plentyful . I went to a swap meet last weekend and drag as well as circle track guys use this stuff . Parts were everywhere and reasonable . You can get an idea about were your going/what you want and start shopping now . Center section parts are generic pretty much , so you can buy the case , pinion support and spool / differential based on the plan you have . Say you want to run 31 , 33 or 35 spline you can start shopping swap meets and auction sites for a locker or spool . U-joint size will determaine which yoke you need . gears are avalible in what ever so if you come across a good deal , buy it . Start making a pile .

Re: 9in for sale

I have a 35 spline spec'd out it will be drum to drum and that is my plan. I have gone the 12 bolt route in the past today I have a extremely low opinion of "how" strong they are not.
That being said I over build most things I do any ways but thats my job. I would rather take longer and pay a bit more up front to do the job once vs having to throw money away and then still have to take the next step.

I ran a 35 spline in my old S15 truck and that would leave on the convertor at 6500 RPM with a 150 HIT off the line. Running on 30X15 firestones at the time. Let that SB off the leash and it was a wheels up launch on or off the bottle.

I broke just about everything I could think off, but that rear diff could take any thing I could throw at it.

Re: 9in for sale

$575 for what you said is included is CHEAP.

My advise is don't throw good money after bad.

Good luck with your choice.
