Moisture Exhaust

Hey guys I seem to have a lot of moisture coming out of the tail pipes. It seems excessive to me. I live in Chicago where its cold and I do not remember if this happened in the summer. I have a Inline 250 with no mods in a 1966 shortbed.

Re: Moisture Exhaust

Isnt this fron condensation in the system and burns off when its hot? I see most modern cars do this too.

Re: Moisture Exhaust

Is this just on warm-up or is it all the time?

Judging by the marks on the bumper, I'd say there is a little oil there too.

Re: Moisture Exhaust

If it only happens during cold weather starts it’s completely normal. Moisture in the atmosphere condenses in the hot mufflers after the engine is shut off. This water supply is now sitting in the muffler waiting to be blown out the tail pipe when the engine is started.

This is why Sears and other chain stores stopped carrying/offering dual exhaust systems back in the 60’s. Single exhausts tend to burn the moisture out much faster with only one pool of water (1 muffler), and more pressure to blow the water out (dual exhausts having less back pressure). This dramatically cut down on their burned out muffler warranty issues to the point they eventually only offered singles.

Re: Moisture Exhaust

Hey thanks Guys! Yea there is a little oil as the engine hasn't been rebuilt. It does it all the time and my bro was saying that he thought it was a head gasket. It is clear water though and I just wanted to get a different perspective. My brother wants me to put a BB in it and is always trying to come up with reasons why I should. He just wants to rip it apart! He had a 84 sitting for awhile but didn't get to build it 4 he had to sell it so he wants to do mine!

Re: Moisture Exhaust

If you are not losing coolant then head gasket is not the problem. I agree condensation, aggravated by ethanol.

Re: Moisture Exhaust

I just got rid of my 65 Burb with a BB and got a 64 swb with a 230 because gas price are going nowhere but up. I would much rather be able to drive my little six than sit and look at the Burbs BB just sitting there because it cost to much to drive. So keep that inline lol As for the water mine does that until it warms up, if the head gasket was leaking you would either have oil in the water in the radiator or you would have milky looking oil. not to mention it would be smoking like a freight train ALL the time. Jut my .02
