Re: Camshafts..
You need to read the instructions that came with the timing set for a 3 keyed crank gear. It will tell you where to set it up for TDC.
Are you talkin' 30 degrees initial??? holy cats! You can pull the lifters out carefully with a pair of pliers. Gary

Re: Camshafts..
Machine shop did the bottom end (assy) im not sure if I have the papers..I called comp and squared it away.
yeah 30 deg initial! Ok the comp was real hard comming out (never done before either). I got a little rough with it 2 times (turning via cam sprocket) There was some metal shavings (not sure from where) like metal hairs actually not very many but more than I wanted to see? I got some pics but they dont show much. Whats excessive and now im worried. Thanks guys its torn down but I have to go out with the MS. Now im worried Gary-I just tunred the cam and picked the lifters up as they came up. Thanks guys leave me something good ![]()

Re: Camshafts..
You got 'em out. That's all that matters. Do any of the bottoms of the lifters look concave and "eaten up"?

Re: Camshafts..
Lobes on the cam look fine.
I glanced at the lifter bottoms as I was taking them out. Nothing JUMPED out at me Only thing im worried about now is the metal hairs that came out toward the rear of the cam..

Re: Camshafts..
I'm gonna bet you scraped some of the coating or babbit off of the cam bearings with the distributor drive gear or a lobe as you pulled the cam out.
You will need to check those cam bearings. Which is pretty tuff with the engine in the truck. If they're gouged, they'll collect crap from the oil and eventually lead to failure. Gary

Re: Camshafts..
As far as I know... It's impossible to put cam bearing in an engine with the engine still in the vehicle. There are special tools rtequired to drive them in and out.
Keep your fingers crossed... Maybe you can look through the litfer holes to the berarings and see if there are any gouges. Gary

Re: Camshafts..
I started to notice them on the back 1/2 of the cam. I got it about 6-8" out of the block and it started to get hard to get out I spun it picked up down/sidexside and it slowly came out I hadd to do a lot of spinning etc to get it all the way out.
The back 1/2 of the cam is when I started to notice it. The very back of the cam (between dizzy gear and lobe) is where the most was.

Re: Camshafts..
The only bearing I can really see is the front one. The rest I cant really see at all even thu peeking thu lifter holes etc etc etc
The front one doesnt look bad or anything at all. Nothing out of the ordinary etc I looked at 1 lifter nothing abnormal. Looked over the cam nothing abnoral on it either. Just some misc metal shavings (quite a few) from What I guess would be the rear of the bearings. I guess I'll clean what I can get to and just keep going??? Do you think I'll ruin the engine if I put it all back together with the new cam etc? I dont wanna stick $300 worth of parts and then it crap out on me lol. Uh this sucks lol I dont think I'll mess with new bearings Id just put it back together with old parts/gaskets and park it for the next X amount of years and wait till I can do it right. Whatchall think, maybe I shouldnt have jumped in lol

Re: Camshafts..
Exactly what I posted. Your cam was too far forward and it wore a lip into the bearing. As soon as you pulled it, the other journals took the lip off. Problem is that if it's like that on the front one from being too far forward, then more than likely they are all like that. Take those metal shavings and times that by 5 bearings. That's a lot of big metal chunks dropping down into the pan, on the crank and rods.....etc.
BTW....it's hard to tell from the pic angle but that bearing looks kinda thin at the bottom and that's where they will wear because of the pull of the chain downward. |

Re: Camshafts..
Are you sure prostreet?
Not real sure what your saying lol.. Sorry for dumb questions but how'd it get too far forwards? So whats the BEST/RIGHT way to fix it? Edit-Its only got like 6000 miles or so on it?!!?
