noise in 04 front
I liked my 72 burb so much i bought a newer one for a daily driver. 1/2 ton stablitrak,4wd 96k. The PO had the left front wheel bearing replaced a few months back. So when i heard a "pop corn" sound coming from the front of the truck i assumed the right one was ready. When i pulled the wheel and caliper the disc didn't move around like i expected so i put the tire back on for leverage and couldn't feel much if anything. With the trans in neutral and the rt front wheel off the ground you can hear a dry sound that seems to be from the front d shaft, the universals didn't seem loose by hand. The pop corn noise doesn't happen in reverse. The cv shaft felt ok. I changed the front diff fluid and it looked like 100k fluid should, no surprises.
1 Can you feel the hub bearing being loose short of grenade time? 2 Can this be from the spline shaft being dry in the t case? I see GM has a special lube for this. |

TTT = To The Top. Sorry I am not sure about your question either, because on my 1500HD the driver side bearing just went south without warning.

Re: noise in 04 front
To me it sounds like a CV joint is bad causing the poping noise. You wouldn't be able to inspect them without removing the boots.

Re: noise in 04 front
Th CV does make sense. The service report noted that the left bearing was really bad. Inside of the wheel is sprayed with rust which must have came from the carnage, maybe it damaged the joint. The noise telegraphs around so it's not easy to pinpoint.
Can you remove the stock boots for inspection and then replace them?

Re: noise in 04 front
Wanted to wrap this thread up. After i bought a front hub assembly the noise became hard to find. It was still there but not as bad and really hard to pinpoint.
When i dropped the trans pan for fluid/filter i found a nice collection of metal pieces on the magnets and top of the filter. This was an under 2k miles GM rebuild installed by a dealer. Long story short, after they swapped the trans the noise was gone. Now that i have a new hub in stock i know those won't go for awhile!
