I've seen people use the finished sticker which can be found in several catalogs. Paint the tailgate the color of the letters, place the sticker on when dry, paint the 'gate the truck's color, and then carefully remove the sticker.

You could also bring that same decal to a sign shop and have them scan it in and give you another decal which is the reverse of the separate letters you scanned. That can then be placed in position on the tailgate after it's been painted, masking off the whole 'gate, and paint the lettering color through it.

I've seen people tape the tailgate, put the stickers on over the tape then cut them out of the tape and peel off stickers and paint.

I put the stickers on my tailgate then cleared over them. It turned out very nice.

This is the way I do it, it's easier to mask off the letters than try to mask the tailgate it's self due to the way the letters indent in the gate.

Personally I would like to know how the factory stenciled them on there, I've seen some that were a little off and you can tell the used some kind of stencil.

They probably had their own stencils but I've seen some great work done with air brush sprayers. If you happen to have one in the area you might ask if they can do that type of work.

they look like crap from the factory, not centered or clean. What I did was paint the tailgate and clear it, rough masked around letters, shot the letters, block sanded back to the clear and recleared entire tailgate. It is a little bolder since the color comes all the way out, but all lines are clean and neat.
